Thelen Ties Two School Records in Win at Lycoming

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Stevenson University men's lacrosse junior JT Thelen tied program records for goals (9) and points (12) in a game as the Mustangs defeated Lycoming College 21-9 Tuesday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth action at Shangraw Sports Complex.

Thelen tied the program record of nine goals established by Steve Kazimer against Messiah on March 1, 2008, while with three assists, Thelen tied a 17-year old record for points in a game.  Bob Rineheimer recorded 12 points against Lycoming on March 31, 2001.

Stevenson (5-6, 3-0 MAC Commonwealth) won for the fifth time in six games and improved to 43-0 in MAC Commonwealth regular season play all-time.  Lycoming (6-5, 2-2 MAC Commonwealth) dropped its second straight conference contest.

The Warriors led 3-2 in the first quarter before Thelen's first goal of the game tied things at the 5:04 mark.  Stevenson took a 4-3 lead into the second quarter as Collin Tucker scored off a feed from Chris Hammerquist with 1:30 left in the frame.

Thelen scored three of the Mustangs' four goals in a span of 3:07 in the second quarter as the guests took an 8-3 lead at the 8:39 mark.  Lycoming scored back-to-back goals at 8:14 and 6:39 to pull within 8-5 before Stevenson scored the final four goals of the half to take a 12-5 lead into the locker room.

Stevenson scored three straight goals to open the second half to take a 15-5 lead with 6:27 left on a Hammerquist tally.  The Mustangs took an 18-8 lead into the fourth quarter and scored the first three goals of the fourth, with Thelen's ninth goal making it 21-8 with 9:37 to go.

The Mustangs outshot Lycoming 58-43 and won 23-32 faceoffs, with sophomore Justin Burnette winning 22-of-30 faceoffs.  Sophomore Sam Ross played the first 55:28 in goal for Stevenson and made 11 saves, while senior Marc Poust played the rest of the way.  Michael Tenant played the first 55:28 in goal for Lycoming and made 17 stops.

Hammerquist recorded two goals and three assists, while seniors Kyle Karsian and Harrison Faecher and sophomore Ethan Christensen each registering two goals and two assists.  Freshman Jacob Tatum added two goals and an assist, while Tucker and junior Gray McKee each had single tallies.

Burnette picked up 12 ground balls, the fourth time in five games he has finished with at least 10.  Senior Austin Howard finished with a pair of caused turnovers and three ground balls as the Mustangs picked up 47 ground balls to 29 for the Warriors.

Garrett Huff led Lycoming with three goals and two assists.

Stevenson returns home Saturday night when it hosts Messiah in a 7:00 MAC Commonwealth contest at Mustang Stadium.
