REISTERSTOWN, Md. - Stevenson women's ice hockey senior Chelsea Ellis became the 12th player in program history to record 10 goals in a career but the Mustangs could not slow down the nation's highest scoring offense in a 7-1 United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) loss versus William Smith Friday evening at Reisterstown Sportsplex.
It is the just the third home loss in the month of November for the Mustangs (0-3-0, 0-1-0 UCHC), including just the fifth loss overall in the month in the last three seasons.
After neither team found the back of the net in the first period, the Herons (3-0-0, 1-0-0 UCHC) netted back-to-back goals, including a power play goal just 41 seconds into the period. The visitors doubled its lead just 3:13 later.
The Mustangs broke a streak of nine unsuccessful power play attempts when Ellis found the back of the net on the third opportunity of the game. Ellis beat goaltender Maggie Salmon glove side on assists from seniors Sarah Antonelli and Natalie Rosendahl.
Stevenson finished 1-for-7 on the power play while William Smith was 2-for-3.
The hosts outshot the Herons, 36-28 and won 37 of the 55 face-offs. Senior Chelsea Blackburn went 17-for-23 at the face-off dot while junior Allie Sabatini was 7-for-11. Freshman Casey Storck won her lone face-off attempt after gaining her first career ice time.
Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, November 11 when the Mustangs host the second of a two-game series versus William Smith in an UCHC contest beginning at 5:30 p.m.
