Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. – A goal by Taylor Dubose snapped an 8-8 tie and lifted Western New England University to a 9-8 victory over No. 12 Stevenson University in non-conference men's lacrosse Saturday night at Mustang Stadium.
The Golden Bears (1-1) were led by Keegan Dudeck with three goals and an assist, while Dubose recorded two goals and an assist. Jared Ward scored twice, while Justin Bard notched a goal and three assists.
Stevenson (1-2) was led by junior Wade Korvin, who tallied two goals and two assists. Senior Stephen Banick notched two goals and an assist, while junior Parish Young finished with a goal and two assists. Seniors Pat Candon and Matt Tompkins and freshman Wesley Reid each added single tallies.
With the game tied 7-7 through three quarters, Western New England took an 8-7 lead with 8:16 remaining on Dudeck's third goal of the contest. Banick tied the game with 3:13 remaining when he spun past a Golden Bear defender and found himself alone with WNE goalie Steven Kerr to Kerr's left, and Banick beat Kerr to tie the game 8-8.
Junior Nathaniel LeQuang won the ensuing faceoff for the Mustangs, and with 2:36 to go, Banick found senior Morgan Pritchett alone in front of the Western New England goal, but Pritchett's shot was stopped by Kerr. The Golden Bears successfully cleared and with 1:45 to go Dubose registered the game-winner.
Western New England won the faceoff and went a man up with 1:01 left following a Mustang cross check. Stevenson was able to force a turnover with 30 seconds to go and Banick had two shots in the final 15 seconds, but his first attempt was stopped by Kerr and the second blocked.
Stevenson trailed 4-2 at halftime but cut the lead in half just six seconds into the third as Candon scored off the faceoff after taking a feed from sophomore Lito Flanagan. Banick tied the game on a man-up goal at 9:39, one of three in the quarter for the hosts, but the Golden Bears took the lead back 55 seconds later on a Ward score. 1:17 later, Bard scored to push the lead back to two.
The Mustangs reeled off three straight goals to take its first lead, 7-6, since going up 1-0 59 seconds into the game on Tompkins' goal. Reid scored his first collegiate goal at the 6:12 mark to make it 6-5, then Korvin notched man-up goals at 5:25 and 1:45 to give Stevenson a 7-6 advantage. The lead lasted just 32 seconds, as Western New England got an extra man opportunity when Stevenson committed its third faceoff violation of the quarter. Dudeck cashed in at 1:13 to tie the game heading to the final frame.
Western New England took a 2-1 lead on a Ward goal with 7:41 to go in the first quarter. Young tied the game with 1:52 left in the first quarter on his unassisted tally, but Dubose scored 5.3 seconds before the end of the quarter to give WNE a 3-2 lead after one. Dudeck had the lone goal of the second quarter, that coming at 8:05, to make it 4-2 at intermission.
Kerr made 13 saves for Western New England, while Stevenson senior Connor Skeen made seven saves. The Mustangs outshot the Golden Bears 35-29 and the hosts were 3-5 on man-up opportunities. Faceoffs were virtually even, with Stevenson winning 11-of-21 at the X.
Stevenson hosts second-ranked Salisbury Wednesday night at 7:00 at Mustang Stadium.
