Box Score SALEM, Va. - Stevenson men's lacrosse sophomore Kyle D'Onofrio scored a career-high three goals, all of which came during an instrumental six-goal stretch as the fifth-ranked Mustangs scored five goals over the second and third quarters to distance themselves from Roanoke in an 11-8 victory Saturday at Kerr Stadium.
Stevenson (3-1) has now won three-straight since its season-opening loss to No. 2 RIT and has won five of seven meetings against the Maroons since 2010, including two of three on the road.
A back-and-forth first quarter saw both teams score five goals and featured five ties as Roanoke answered every time the Mustangs scored to go ahead by one.
However, a 5-1 run over the second and third quarters was the difference for Stevenson as the team took a 10-6 lead and would not be threatened again.
With the scored tied at 5-5, D'Onofrio scored the first of his three goals with 10:20 remaining in the second to spark the decisive run. Junior Ryan Kirby then scored his first goal of the season with 8:35 left to give the Mustangs a 7-5 halftime lead before Tyler McWilliams scored the first of his two second-half goals to pull Roanoke within one with 12:01 left.
D'Onofrio followed with his second goal just 49 seconds later to key a three-goal spurt and give Stevenson its largest lead of the day at 11-7 after goals by junior Pat Candon and senior Colin Dabney.
McWilliams stopped the run with his second goal at 9:59 of the fourth quarter before D'Onofrio answered him once again less than two minutes later.
The Maroons' Conn Curry capped the scoring with 3:55 left to provide the final margin for the Mustangs who outshot Roanoke, 58-32.
Stevenson also won the faceoff battle, winning 14-of-23 while its defense held the Maroons (2-2) to just 14-of-21 on clear attempts and 2-of-7 on extra-man opportunities. Junior Ben Richards finished with a season-high 14 saves while senior Callum Robinson had nine ground balls and five of the Mustangs' 10 caused turnovers.
Junior Stephen Banick finished with four points on two goals and two assists to lead an offense that had nine different players register a point and eight score at least one goal.
McWilliams, Kevin Jackson and Will Pilat each had three points while Dylan Torrey made 20 saves for Roanoke who defeated No. 6 York (Pa.) on the road Wednesday, 10-7.
Stevenson has the next 10 days to prepare for a showdown with No. 1 Tufts at Mustang Stadium on Tuesday, March 17 in what will be a match-up of the last two national champions. Faceoff is at 7:00 p.m.
