Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson men's lacrosse senior Paul Danko and junior Pat Candon each totaled five points while junior Ben Richards had 12 saves as the third-ranked Mustangs overcame a slow start en route to a 17-4 victory over Western New England Saturday night at Mustang Stadium.
Stevenson (2-1) improved to 11-0 in home openers under head coach Paul Cantabene who was coaching in his 199th career game on Saturday. He now owns a 158-41 career record.
The Golden Bears scored the game's first two goals with Justin Bard picking up a goal and an assist as WNE led 2-0 with 5:52 remaining in the first quarter.
However, junior Dylan Muti scored his first of the year 50 seconds later to start a 10-0 run for the Mustangs who took a 10-2 lead with 5:38 left in the second quarter. Danko scored three of his four goals during the run while senior Billy Burgoyne had two. Candon picked up three assists while senior Callum Robinson added two.
Western New England (1-1) cut its deficit to six at the half after two goals in the final 3:14, including James Kolesar's first of the season with just 0.9 seconds to play.
Stevenson was outshot 14-13 in the opening quarter, but held a 15-9 advantage in the second half while limiting the Golden Bears to just 2-for-8 on extra-man opportunities.
Muti added his second of the year to start the third quarter which keyed a 7-0 run for the Mustangs to close the game, five of which came in the fourth quarter. Danko and Burgoyne each scored again while junior Stephen Banick scored the second of his first two goals of the season.
Danko finished with four goals and one assist while Candon had a goal and four assists. Banick totaled two goals and two assists while Burgoyne had three goals.
Stevenson finished with a 54-38 advantage in shots and won 14-of-23 faceoffs. The team also scored on all three extra-man opportunities and picked up 34 ground balls compared to 25 for WNE.
Four different players scored goals for the Golden Bears while Brandon Body made 14 saves.
Stevenson returns to action next Saturday, March 7 when it travels to No. 19 Roanoke who lost 10-9 to Sewanee this afternoon. Game time is at 2:00 p.m.
