OWINGS MILLS, Md. - In his third career game, Stevenson men's lacrosse freshman Tyler Fuhrman scored a career-high three goals, including the team's final two tallies as the No. 5 Mustangs withstood a late game surge from Roanoke en route to a 12-11 victory Saturday night at Mustang Stadium.

With the win, Stevenson (5-1) snapped a two-game losing streak in the series that has seen four of the last five games decided by just one goal, two of which have gone into overtime.

After a goal by sophomore Justin Buonomo gave the Mustangs their largest lead of the game at 9-4 with 12:00 remaining in the third quarter, Roanoke's Joey Dishaw scored just 18 seconds later to key a string of three consecutive goals by the Maroons who pulled within two, 9-7.

Roanoke (4-3), who scored seven of the game's final 10 goals over the last 26:42, cut its deficit to only one on the second of back-to-back goals by Kevin Jackson with 4:31 left in the third. Nevertheless, Fuhrman responded with his third goal of the game, netting what proved to be the game-winner with just four seconds remaining.

After both teams combined for 12 third-quarter goals with six each, they would net just one in the fourth as Tyler McWilliams scored his third of the game with 1:09 remaining to pull the Maroons within one for the fourth time.

However, that would be as close as the visitors would get as they totaled three penalties in the final 53 seconds, the first of which resulted in the eighth extra-man opportunity for the Mustangs. Stevenson finished the game 4-for-8 after running out the clock.

The two teams combined for 22 penalties for 19:30 and seven man-up goals.

Despite the close margin, the Mustangs trailed for a total of just 42 seconds. McWilliams gave the Maroons a 1-0 lead with 2:23 left in the first quarter before junior Billy Burgoyne tied the game at the 1:41 mark, marking the game's only tie.

A quartet of Mustangs finished with two goals apiece in Burgoyne, senior Glen Tompkins, junior Colin Dabney and sophomore Joe Balestrieri. Senior Chris Dashiell and junior Tony Rossi had two assists each while the combination of Buonomo and senior Brent Hiken won 19-of-25 face-offs.

McWilliams and Jackson both totaled three goals and one assist while Charles Pease made 18 saves, including 11 in the second half.

Sophomore Dimitri Pecunes stopped nine shots for Stevenson.

The Mustangs return to action on Tuesday, March 18 when they host No. 4 Tufts at Mustang Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m.
