Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Stevenson women's basketball team held a 27-point halftime lead, holding Wesley to just 3-of-28 shooting from the floor while forcing 17 turnovers as all 14 players saw action in the Mustangs' 63-42 victory Wednesday at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
The win, coupled with Hood's 60-59 victory over Frostburg State, moved Stevenson (8-12, 4-8 CAC) into sole possession of the sixth and final spot in the CAC Women's Basketball Championship. It also avenged a 54-45 loss suffered to the Wolverines back on January 9.
Senior Amanda Craig (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) led the Mustangs with 14 points, three rebounds and three assists. Freshman Kayleigh Guzek (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) added 12 points and four rebounds while junior Sam Murray (Reisterstown, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) totaled seven points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Stevenson opened the game with a 28-2 run as Wesley started the game 0-for-22 from the floor. The Wolverines did not score until Rachelle Allen scored on a fast-break lay-up to give the team its first points from the field with 4:59 remaining in the first half.
The Mustangs led 36-9 at halftime before stretching their lead to as many as 37 points in the second half, 49-12 with 12:07 left.
All 14 players on the roster played at least three minutes for Stevenson with 10 scoring at least two points, including freshman Kia Dawkins (Clinton, Md./Dr. Henry Wise) and freshman Chanel Smith (Clinton, Md./Bishop McNamara).
Freshman Sabrina Vaitkevicius (New Castle, Del./William Penn) had six points, a career-high five rebounds and three assists.
The three players from Delaware on the Stevenson roster, Craig, Vaitkevicius and senior Katey Briggs (Wilmington, Del./Padua Academy) combined for 23 points and 11 rebounds.
Jazmine Miller led the Wolverines (5-15, 2-9 CAC) with 24 points and six rebounds while Aleisha Hobbs with nine points and four rebounds.
Stevenson hosts Hood in a CAC contest on Saturday beginning at 2:00 p.m. The team will be participating in the WBCA's Play 4 Kay to raise money and awareness for breast cancer so all fans are asked to wear pink.
