Defense Leads No. 3 Men's Lacrosse to 11-4 Win at No. 7 Haverford

HAVERFORD, Pa. - Stevenson men's lacrosse junior Ian Bolland (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) tied his career-high with 16 saves to lead a defensive effort that forced 18 turnovers and held No. 7 Haverford to just four goals as the Mustangs opened the season with an 11-4 road win Saturday at Swan Field.

Stevenson (1-0), who improved its record to 7-0 in season openers under head coach Paul Cantabene, outshot the Fords 54-38 and won 14-of-17 face-offs.

Senior Ray Witte (Annapolis/St. Peter and Paul) won all 14 face-offs and now has 405 in his career, becoming just the second player in school history to reach 400.

Bolland highlighted a defense effort that held Haverford (0-1) scoreless on four extra-man opportunities and to just one goal in the first half as the Mustangs built an 8-1 lead. Senior Evan Douglass (Exeter, N.H./Exeter) also finished with four of the team's eight caused turnovers.

Bolland's also had 16 saves in his first career start on Apr. 13, 2010 as Stevenson defeated St. Mary's (Md.) at home, 13-10.

Senior Kyle Moffitt (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) led the way offensively with three goals as he posted his seventh career game with at least three goals while senior Jimmy Dailey (Westminster/Winters Mill) added a goal and two assists and junior Justin Lea (Elkridge/Mount Saint Joseph) also added three points, a new career-high, with two goals and one assist.

Neither team was able to score early until Moffitt found the back of the net with 3:57 remaining in the first quarter. Senior Jake Stocksdale (Westminster/Winters Mill) followed with his first of the season just 47 seconds later and the Mustangs led 2-0 after one.

Stevenson scored six second-quarter goals, including two from sophomore Tyler Reid (Clinton, Conn./Xavier), who had the game-winner, and another one from Moffitt as it stretched its lead to seven at the half. Dailey and Lea each had a goal and an assist in the quarter.

Both teams scored three times in the second half and the Mustangs' were never threatened as they cruised to their eighth victory over a top-10 team in the last three seasons.

Max Hjelm, Myles Monaghan and Jason Leeds each had two points for Haverford while Joe Banno made 19 saves.

Stevenson makes its home debut on Wednesday when it hosts Mary Washington at Caves Athletics Complex beginning at 3:00 p.m.
