DOVER, Del. - After falling behind 3-0 in the
game's first eight minutes, the No. 3-ranked Stevenson men's
lacrosse team outscored Wesley 23-4, led by a career-high five
points from senior Sean Calabrese
(Rockville/DeMatha) as the Mustangs remained unbeaten
against the Wolverines since joining the CAC with a 23-7 win
Saturday night at Miller Stadium.
Calabrese scored the game-winner for Stevenson (12-1, 4-1 CAC)
and finished with four goals and one assist. He was one of three
Mustangs to score four goals as junior Kyle Moffitt
(Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) and junior
Neal
Barthelme (Towson/Dulaney) also netted four.
Moffitt tied his career-high with six points, equalling his
six-goal output in an 18-9 win over No. 7 Roanoke on March 27 while
Barthelme tied his career-best set in a 24-4 win versus Kean on
February 27 when he had two goals and two assists.
It was the fourth time this season that the Mustangs scored 20
or more goals. A total of 10 players scored a goal while 12 had at
least one point.
Stevenson totaled a season-high 72 shots, 41 of which came in
the second half where the team outscored Wesley, 11-2. The Mustangs
held a commanding 72-30 advantage in shots and a 50-30 edge in
ground balls.
Stevenson also won 21-of-36 face-offs with junior Ray Witte
(Annapolis/St. Peter and Paul) winning 17-of-24 to go
along with 12 ground balls. He now has won 187 face-offs this
season while totaling 96 ground balls to rank fifth all-time for a
single season.
Freshman Pete Wesselman
(Charlotte, N.C./Providence) and sophomore Ian Bolland
(Mountain Lakes, Pa./Mt. Lakes) combined to make nine
saves with Wesselman stopping seven in his first career start.
The two led a defensive effort that held its opponent to seven
goals or less for the eighth time in 13 games this season.
Sophomore Tyler Brown
(Parkton/Hereford) added one ground ball and one caused
turnover.
Eric Crumbock led the Wolverines (2-9, 1-4 CAC) with one goal
and two assists while Brad Smith and Dan Skeels each had two goals.
Michael McGuigan had 15 saves in 40 minutes while Sean Mathews
added four.
Stevenson returns home where it will host St. Mary's (Md.) on
Tuesday beginning at 4:00 p.m.
