Strong Second Half Leads No. 2 Mustangs to Fourth Win

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The No. 2-ranked Stevenson men's lacrosse scored six of the game's final seven goals, including two from senior Dave Cougler (Rochester, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley), to blow open a one-goal game in the third quarter en route to an 11-5 victory over No. 16 Western New England Sunday at Caves Athletics Complex.

The win was the eighth for Stevenson (4-0) in the last two seasons against a team ranked in the top-20 and its 11th consecutive at home.

The Mustangs led 5-1 with 3:07 remaining in the second quarter after junior Jimmy Dailey (Westminster/Winters Mill) scored the first of his two goals off an assist from junior Kyle Moffitt (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East).

However, the Golden Bears (0-2) scored back-to-back goals only 43 seconds apart in the final minute by Patrick White and Andrew Mariani to pull within two at halftime, 5-3.

Corigan Harreys scored off a feed from Tim Santye with a man advantage at the 12:03 mark of the third quarter as Western New England trailed by just one, 5-4. The goal capped a span of 10 minutes in which the team scored four of the game's five goals to rally from a four-goal deficit.

Senior Richie Ford (Baltimore/Towson) scored three of Stevenson's first six goals with his last coming at 10:22 in the third quarter that started a 6-0 run for the Mustangs to push their lead to 11-4 after senior Steve Kazimer (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger) tallied his first with 12:43 left in the fourth.

Ford finished with four points to lead all scorers while Dailey, Moffitt and Cougler each totaled two goals and one assist.

Stevenson held a 47-21 edge in shots, including a 23-10 advantage in the second half, but was 0-for-10 with with a man advantage. Neither team's man-up offense was effective as the Golden Bears were 1-of-5.

Mike Santare led Western New England with two goals and one assist while Brewster Knowlton made 15 saves. Senior Geoff Hebert (Lutherville/Dulaney) stopped six shots for Stevenson.

The Mustangs return to action next Saturday when they host Lycoming beginning at 1:00 p.m.
