FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Stevenson men's lacrosse
senior Steve Kazimer (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger)
had four goals and one assist while senior Andrew
Harrington (Cambridge/South Dorchester) made five saves in
his first career start as the No. 2 Mustangs opened CAC play with
an 11-4 victory at Mary Washington Wednesday.
The win was the 25th-straight regular season victory for
Stevenson (8-0, 1-0 CAC) and its 10th consecutive in the CAC.
With five points, Kazimer now has 195 for his career, five shy
of becoming just the second player in school history to reach 200
and 64 from tying Eric Schmith's career record of 259 set from
1996-99.
Kazimer ranks second in both points and assists with 103
and needs just eight goals to become the third player in team
history with 100. Junior Richie Ford
(Baltimore/Towson), who was held without a point for the
first time this season, is currently second with 120 goals, two
short of Schmith's all-time record.
The Mustangs scored the game's first three goals, including
three from junior Kyle Moffitt (Harrisburg, Pa./Central
Dauphin East) who has totaled nine in his last three
games, to take a 6-0 lead.
The Eagles (4-5, 0-1 CAC) were held scoreless for the game's
first 24:52 until Harry Snyder scored the first of three-straight
goals in the final 5:08 of the second quarter for Mary Washington
to cut its deficit to three at the half.
However, Stevenson opened the second half with four consecutive
goals, including three-straight third quarter tallies from
Kazimer, to push the lead to seven, 10-3 with 7:20 remaining in the
fourth.
The Mustangs outscored the Eagles 7-0 during the first and third
quarters while both teams were even at 4-4 over the second and
fourth.
Junior Ray Witte (Annapolis/St. Peter and Paul)
won 17-of-18 face-offs to increase his success rate
to 63.4 percent this season. The school record for a single
season is 68.2 percent set by Scott Steers in 1998. Steers is
also second at 66.1 percent in 1997 while current assistant coach
Greg Furshman is third at 63.6 percent a year ago.
Snyder finished with three goals to lead Mary Washington while
Matt Prin totaled a school record 29 saves after facing 60 shots.
Stevenson returns home to fhost a top-10 showdown with No. 7
Roanoke on Saturday at Caves Athletics Complex beginning at 1:00
p.m. It will mark the first meeting between the two schools since
2001 when the Maroons won 10-7 in Salem.
