DOVER, Del. - Cory Boyd hit two free throws
with 12 seconds remaining to give Wesley a two-point lead and
then sealed the Wolverines' 59-58 overtime victory over Stevenson
on Monday at Wentworth Gymnasium with a steal with just one second
left.
After Boyd broke a 57-57 tie and gave Wesley (9-6, 4-3 CAC) a
two-point lead with 12 seconds remaining in overtime, the
Wolverines' Angie Owens fouled Stevenson freshman guard
Vanessa Rice (Oxon Hill/National Christian
Academy) with six seconds to play.
Rice hit the first of two free throw attempts, but missed the
second before sophomore forward Daniela Poss
(Brookeville/Good Counsel) grabbed the rebound and the
Mustangs called a timeout to set up for the last shot.
However, following the timeout, Mustang junior guard
JaQuelia Conley (Columbia/Montrose Christian)
drove baseline looking to create space for a shot at a game-winner,
but Boyd came up with the steal with one second left to preserve
Wesley's win streak and extend it to six.
The loss marked the first overtime game for Stevenson (4-10, 2-5
CAC) since Jan. 12, 2005 when they team won a 58-57 decision
at home versus D'Youville. The Mustangs are 2-2 all-time in
overtime games.
Stevenson forced overtime after a three-pointer by
freshman forward Rayshell Parker (Fort
Meade/Meade) with five seconds remaining in regulation
capped a 5-0 run by the Mustangs in the final 42 seconds.
Wednesday's game featured 13 ties and 15 lead changes and
neither team led by more than five.
The Mustangs committed 29 turnovers in the game which led to 27
points for the Wolverines, including 15 in the second half where
Wesley made just 10-of-30 attempts from the floor, including 1-of-9
from three-point range.
Conley led Stevenson with 15 points despite shooting 5-of-23
from the floor and 1-of-10 from three-point range. Parker finished
with her first career double double with 11 points and 15 rebounds,
both career-highs, and junior forward Kristen Steiner
(Fallston/Fallston) added eight points and season-high 16
rebounds, four shy of her career-high.
Rice also had 11 points for the Mustangs.
Jazmine Miller had a game-high 21 points for the Wolverines
while Owens and Allison Beddia added 16 and 13, respectively. Only
two other players scored for Wesley.
Stevenson returns home to face Salisbury on Wednesday. Game time
is at 5:00 p.m.
