DOVER, Del. - Wesley used a 17-4 run over the
final 10:44 to erase a seven-point deficit and hand the Stevenson
University women's basketball team a 54-49 loss Monday night at
Wentworth Gymnasium.
Cory Boyd led the Wolverines (12-7, 8-2 CAC) with 15 points,
nine assists and four rebounds while Angie Owens added 11 points
and 10 rebounds for her 11th double double of the season.
The Mustangs (4-16, 2-9 CAC) were led by senior guard
Tara Galvin (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) who
totaled a game-high 15 points on five three-pointers.
Galvin's fifth three-pointer tied the game at 49-49 with 2:07
remaining, but Boyd would score four of Wesley's final five points,
including two from the free throw line with five seconds left to
seal the Wolverines' fourth consecutive win and their 11th in the
last 13.
Following a layup by freshman guard Breonna Brewer
(Baltimore/Polytechnic), Stevenson held its second-largest
lead of the game at seven points, 44-37 with 10:44 remaining.
However, the Mustangs would make just two of its final 11
attempts from the floor while missing all four of its free
throws and committing nine turnovers which led to nine of
Wesley's 17 points.
With the game tied at 19-19, Stevenson outscored the Wolverines
17-9 to take its largest lead of the game at eight points, 36-28
with 17:19 to play in the second half.
Senior forward Ashley Burrell (Baltimore/Institute of
Notre Dame) finished with 14 points and five rebounds for
the Mustangs who scored 21 points off of 22 Wesley turnovers.
Stevenson's five starters combined for 39 of the team's 49
points with Brewer and sophomore forward Jasmine
Jarrett (Woodstock/Mount Hebron) each contributing four
points off the bench.
The Mustangs return home to face Gallaudet on Wednesday at
Student Union Gymnasium beginning at 6:00 p.m. One of Stevenson's
two CAC victories came against the Bison on the road back on
January 10, 64-41.
