STEVENSON, Md. - Highlighted by five points
from Colleen Thomas and three from Cory Boyd, Wesley used a 10-0
run midway through the second half to take its largest lead of the
game at 11 points en route to a 56-48 victory over the Stevenson
University women's basketball team Thursday night in a CAC contest
inside Student Gymnasium.
Boyd and Michele Mules each finished with a team-high 14 points
while Boyd added 12 to help the Wolverines (5-5, 2-0 CAC) overcome
12 turnovers and a 30.4 percent field goal percentage in the second
half.
Freshman forward Joy Bettis (Laurel/Montrose
Christian) led the Mustangs (1-10, 0-3 CAC) with a
career-high 15 points, 10 of which came in the first half. She
finished the game 3-of-3 from three-point range and 6-of-8 from the
free throw line.
Senior guard Tara Galvin (Lititz, Pa./Manheim
Township) and freshman guard JaQuelia Conley
(Columbia/Montrose Christian) each added 11. Galvin also
had a season and team-high seven rebounds.
Leading 36-35 with 15:24 remaining, Wesley scored 10 consecutive
points while Stevenson missed six-straight attempts from the floor
and two from the free throw line in falling behind by 11, 46-35
with 9:39 to play.
The Mustangs to pulled to within five, 46-41 following Conley's
third three-pointer of the game at 8:34, but that would be as close
as they would get as the Wolverines pushed their margin back to 11
on a 5-0 run in the final three minutes to pick up their
fourth-straight
victory and first road win of the season.
Angie Owens totaled seven points and a school-record 22 rebounds
while Boyd added five assists, four rebounds and four steals along
with her 14 points.
Stevenson travels to Gallaudet for a CAC contest on Saturday.
