NEWTOWN, Pa. - The Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Commonwealth has announced its yearly award winners as well as its First, Second, and Honorable Mention Selections. Grant Zick and Gavin Gossen were named Midfielder and Rookie of the Year respectively, and ten total Mustangs earned All-MAC nods.
The Mustangs' season has not yet concluded, as they defeated Eastern University in the MAC Commonwealth title game on May 4th to advance to the NCAA Tournament. They travel to Union College to take on the #12 Garnet Chargers on Saturday, May 11th at 3 p.m. in the NCAA Second Round.
Zick was an easy selection for Midfielder of the Year after leading the Mustangs all season in points and assists. In 19 games played, he started 17, racking up 79 points on 44 assists and 35 points with a .553 shots on goal percentage. He tallied 31 ground balls and added ten caused turnovers as well.
Gossen has been a top attackman for the Mustangs in his debut season, starting all 19 games. He is one of just four players to start every single game this season. In that time, he has accumulated 31 goals and 21 assists with one game-winner, adding 25 ground balls and three caused turnovers. As of now, Gossen ranks fourth on the team in goals, assists, and points.
On the All-MAC Commonwealth First Team are Zick, junior midfielder Jack Scaliti, senior defenseman Ryan Quinn, graduate student defenseman Ed Masterson, and senior face-off specialist Conor Halpin.
Scaliti trails Zick to rank second on the team in assists with 36, adding 26 goals for a team-third 62 points with 13 ground balls and two caused turnovers. Quinn has notched four assists this season, leading the Mustangs with 29 caused turnovers and boasting 51 ground balls. Masterson has scored two pole goals and added three assists for five points while causing 21 turnovers and collecting 45 ground balls. Halpin has had the best season of his career, going 254-405 (.627) on face-offs and tallying 171 ground balls with 12 goals.
Sophomore attackman Max Racich and graduate student defenseman Nicholas Mulvey landed on the Second Team. Racich led the Mustangs all season in goals, currently totaling 50, with 22 assists for 72 overall points. Of his 50 goals, 13 were man-up. He also has 32 ground balls and seven caused turnovers on the season. Mulvey is another Mustang that has started all 19 games, scoring one goal, causing 17 turnovers, and ranking second on the team in ground balls with 52.
Alongside Gossen on the Honorable Mention roster were junior midfielder Robbie Vanderklugt and graduate student goalkeeper Justin Scorese. Vangerklugt saw time in every game this season, scoring in the win over Elizabethtown. He added 21 ground balls and eight caused turnovers. In net, Scorese has started every game, acquiring all 13 of the Mustangs' wins this season in over 980 minutes played. He boasts 144 saves on the season so far for a .463 save percentage.
