Martinez Competes for Medal; Mustangs Conclude Season in Seventh at MAC Championships

YORK, Pa. - Denise Martinez gave Stevenson their best finish in any event at the MAC Championships after she secured fifth-place during the 200-yard Backstroke.

After four days of competition, Stevens Institute of Technology won the MAC Championship with 1516 points, and the Mustangs secured seventh after they totaled 603.5 points.

The finals on the last day of the championships opened with the 1650-yard Freestyle. James Riordon had no swimmers qualify for the lone heat swam during the finals, but Charlotte Forte came second across the three preliminary heats, comprised of 17 swimmers, after she swam a 18:52.31. Forte's time is a personal best by over 27 seconds and shy of the program record by 1.16 seconds. Following the final 1650 Free heat swam in the afternoon, Forte finished eighth overall.

Natalie Kent and Emmalynn Kohl also swam in the preliminary session of the mile free and finished 13th and 14th, respectively. Kent's time of 20:59.70 was a season best.

Following the 1650 Free was the 100 Free finals, which showcased Laila Umrani-Sanders. In the preliminary heats, she swam a 57.43, the fastest time in Heat C. Jorden Sowards-Barnett and Kohl competed as well, but fell short of qualifying for the finals despite recording season-best times.

Umrani-Sanders won Heat C and secured 17th in the finals with a personal-best time of 56.20.

Stevenson was led in the 200 Back by Alexa Darak and Martinez. Darak secured a Heat B lane, while Martinez swam in Heat A and competed for a podium position. The first-year finished fourth and swam a personal best in the morning session, recording a time of 2:13.73. Sydney Kawana also competed in the preliminary heats but fell short of qualifying. 

Martinez, in her first MAC Championships, secured fifth-place for the Mustagns and swam a 2:13.85 in the final 200 Back heat. Darak tied for 11th overall after swimming a personal best 2:19.49.

The final individual event of the championships was the 200-yard Breaststroke. Sophia Schultze, Olivia Jansen, and Jordan Terrell took to the blocks representing the Stangs. Schultze and Jansen secured qualification in Heat B and Heat C, respectively, for the afternoon session. Terrell ended her preliminary swim with a personal best time of 2:54.33. The finals of the 200 Breast saw Schultze grab 16th and Jansen 19th.

The MAC Championships ended with the 400 Free Relay. Stevenson fielded two relay teams, A and B. Forte, Claire Price, Terrell, and Sowards-Barnett swam in Heat 1 as relay team B and finished in 19th place. Relay team A, swam by Umrani-Sanders, Darak, Eryn O'Brien, and Martinez, competed in Heat 3, finishing in eighth.
