Owings Mills, Md. (January 31) – The Stevenson University men's and women's basketball teams will host Alvernia University on Saturday, January 31, for a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader at Owings Mills Gymnasium, while also highlighting Colon Cancer Awareness Night.
The women's game is scheduled to tip off at 1 p.m., followed by the men's contest at 3 p.m. Both teams will participate in the awareness initiative, helping educate fans on the importance of early detection, prevention, and understanding personal risk factors for colorectal cancer.
Throughout the afternoon, fans will have the opportunity to receive free giveaways, available to select lucky attendees during each game.
Colon Cancer Awareness Night aims to spotlight the importance of health education and early screening. Colorectal cancer remains one of the most common cancers in the United States, with more than 150,000 new cases expected to be diagnosed this year. While it is the second-leading cause of cancer-related deaths when men and women are combined, it is often preventable and highly treatable when detected early through regular screening.
Current guidelines recommend that adults begin colorectal cancer screening at age 45, or earlier for individuals with higher risk factors such as family history or genetic conditions. Recent data has also shown a concerning rise in diagnoses among individuals under the age of 50, emphasizing the need for early awareness and proactive conversations with healthcare providers.
Stevenson Athletics encourages all fans in attendance to take part in the awareness effort on Saturday, January 31st at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., while cheering on the Mustang basketball teams.
