Chester, Pa. (January 24) — The Stevenson Mustangs delivered a strong offensive showing Saturday afternoon but ultimately fell to Widener, 91–76, in MAC Commonwealth action at the Schwartz Center.
Stevenson came out with energy in the opening quarter, trading baskets early and setting the tone offensively. After Widener struck first,
Anaya Price answered with a driving layup, and
Janiya Ennis knocked down a three-pointer to give the Mustangs an early spark. The teams exchanged the lead several times as Price and Ennis continued to attack the lane and stretch the defense. Late in the quarter, Ennis buried another triple and followed it with a pull-up jumper to keep Stevenson in front, sending the Mustangs into the second quarter holding a slim 19–18 advantage.
The Mustangs carried that momentum into the early minutes of the second quarter. Price capitalized on a turnover with a layup and free throw, pushing Stevenson briefly ahead by four. Widener answered with a run midway through the period, but Stevenson stayed within striking distance behind strong interior play from
Nadia Ferguson and steady contributions from
Tessa Boswell and
Aliyah Jean-Jacques.
Destiny Towns added points at the line, and Price continued to pressure the defense in transition. Despite Stevenson's balanced attack, a late Widener three-pointer gave the hosts a 42–37 edge heading into halftime.
Stevenson opened the third quarter aggressively, cutting into the deficit with a Ferguson layup and a deep three from Price. Ennis continued her hot hand, converting tough finishes in the paint and knocking down perimeter shots to keep the Mustangs close. Stevenson shot efficiently during the period and matched Widener basket for basket, trimming the gap to single digits several times. The Mustangs posted their highest-scoring quarter with 25 points, but Widener maintained its advantage and carried a 70–62 lead into the final frame.
In the fourth quarter, Stevenson continued to battle, with Price connecting from beyond the arc and Ennis attacking the rim to keep the Mustangs competitive. However, Widener capitalized on second-chance opportunities and timely scoring to extend its lead down the stretch. Stevenson continued to fight until the final buzzer, closing out the contest with a 91–76 final score.
Stevenson will look to bounce back in its next contest, traveling to Albright on Wednesday, January 28, for a 6:00 p.m. MAC Commonwealth tipoff.
