Owings Mills, Md. (January 17) – Stevenson women's basketball delivered a complete four-quarter effort on Saturday afternoon, pulling away in the second half to secure a 62–53 MAC Commonwealth victory over Eastern inside Owings Mills Gymnasium.
The Mustangs jumped out with early defensive pressure, as
Janiya Ennis opened the scoring with a fast-break layup just seconds into the contest. Eastern answered with a brief surge, but Stevenson stayed within striking distance behind transition opportunities and strong rebounding from
Tessa Boswell and
Nadia Ferguson. A late three-pointer by
Anaya Price helped keep the Mustangs close, though the Eagles held a narrow 13–9 edge after the opening quarter.
Stevenson found its rhythm in the second period. Price sparked the offense with a fast-break triple and followed with a driving layup to tie the game at 14–14.
Destiny Towns provided a lift off the bench with a steal, a second-chance basket, and trips to the free-throw line as the Mustangs briefly grabbed their first lead of the afternoon. Ennis added a put-back in the final minute to keep the pressure on, sending Stevenson into halftime trailing just 23–22.
The Mustangs came out of the break with renewed energy on both ends of the floor. Price continued to lead the attack, knocking down a pair of three-pointers and attacking the lane to fuel a 20-point third quarter. Ferguson added timely finishes inside, while Ennis and Boswell anchored the defensive effort to limit Eastern's second-chance opportunities. Stevenson outscored the Eagles 20–17 in the frame to take a slim 42–40 advantage heading into the final quarter.
Stevenson saved its strongest push for the closing 10 minutes. The Mustangs opened the fourth quarter with crisp ball movement and aggressive drives, stretching the lead to multiple possessions. Price remained hot from the perimeter and at the rim, while Ferguson converted from the free-throw line to keep momentum on Stevenson's side. Ennis added key assists and defensive pressure as the Mustangs controlled the pace down the stretch, sealing the 62–53 victory.
Stevenson will look to carry its momentum into its next MAC Commonwealth contest, hosting York (Pa.) on Wednesday, January 21 at 7:00 p.m.
