Women's Basketball Clamps Down Defensively to Defeat York (Pa.), 54–42

Owings Mills, Md. (January 21) – The Stevenson women's basketball team put together a complete performance on both ends of the floor Wednesday night, earning a 54–42 MAC Commonwealth victory over York (Pa.) inside Owings Mills Gymnasium.

The opening quarter featured a defensive battle, with both teams trading empty possessions early. Tessa Boswell got Stevenson on the board first with a finish in the paint, and after a second-chance three from Boswell, the Mustangs held a brief five-point edge. York answered back to knot the game at 9–9 late in the period, but Janiya Ennis connected on a short jumper to push Stevenson back in front. The Spartans converted at the buzzer to even the score, sending the teams into the second quarter tied 11–11.

Stevenson seized control in the second frame. Ennis opened the period with a steal and fast-break layup, sparking an early run. Kalea Wynter and Nadia Ferguson added baskets in transition, while Ennis knocked down a three-pointer to stretch the lead. Elia Richardson drilled a triple midway through the quarter, and Destiny Towns finished a strong take to give the Mustangs their largest advantage of the half. Stevenson closed the quarter with a late bucket from Richardson, heading into halftime with a 29–19 cushion.

The Mustangs continued to apply pressure coming out of the break. Boswell scored twice inside to maintain the double-digit margin, and Ferguson added another finish in the paint. Ennis converted a basket and free throw during a short run that pushed the lead to 12. York attempted to answer with a few inside scores, but Stevenson's defense forced key stops and controlled the glass, carrying a 41–28 advantage into the final quarter.

In the fourth, Stevenson stayed composed as York (Pa.)  tried to cut into the deficit. Janiya Ennis and Elia Richardson continued to pace the offense, while timely defensive rebounds limited second-chance opportunities. The Mustangs maintained their double-digit lead down the stretch and closed out the contest from the free-throw line to secure the 54–42 win.

Stevenson will remain on the road for its next contest, traveling to Widener on Saturday, January 24 for MAC Commonwealth action at 1:00 p.m.
