Determination To Play Carries Mustangs To Win Over MCLA

Box Score

STEVENSON, Md. - Hard work, grit, and determination were going to be the words of the weekend for the Stevenson baseball team as they spent four hours shoveling snow on Friday and a few hours prior to their game on Saturday just to get Sugar Field up to playable conditions.  Once that task was finished there was a game today as the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts was the opponent that awaited the Mustangs.  Stevenson fell behind early but rallied back to down the Trailblazers by a 7-4 final on Saturday afternoon.

  • MCLA (0-1) managed one base runner in the top half of the inning as graduate starting pitcher Joe Thompson hit the second batter of the game Jeff Bink, but let him go no further than first.
  • Stevenson (4-2) went down in order against visiting pitcher Bobby New.

  • With one out Logan Rumbolt reached on an error and Antonio Archina singled putting two men on for Jake Ferrara.
  • He put the Trailblazers on the board with an RBI single scoring Rumbolt, before the next batter Dillon Maxon grounded out which plated another for the 2-0 lead.
  • Ben Durland grounded out to end the rally.
  • In the home, half junior Alex Kidwiler picked up the Mustangs first hit but unfortunately was picked off of first.

  • After a one-two-three frame for Thompson, Stevenson came to bat looking to chip into the deficit.
  • Junior Kevin Murray ledoff with a fly out before classmate Brady Kessler smacked a double to left.
  • Then, with two gone and a man on second, senior Zachary DeLong reached on a miscue by the shortstop to put runners on the corner for Kidwiler.
  • He put the Mustangs on the board with a knock through the left side scoring one.  The next hitter was sophomore Thomas Holcomb who gave the home team the lead with a two-run double to right center for a 3-2 lead.

  • A shutdown inning was delivered by Thompson yet again with a pair of fly outs and a pop-up to the shortstop.
  • Stevenson added to their lead when Kessler plated one with a sacrifice fly with one down which left Murray on second for senior catcher Jordan Moore.
  • He picked up a single, unfortunately, it did not result in a run as Murray was gunned down at the plate on a strong throw from the left fielder.

  • With men at second and third with two gone Rumbolt knotted the score at 4-4 with a two-run knock to left.
  • The threat looked to continue as two runners were on for Ferrara who whiffed on strike three.
  • The Mustangs looked to answer in their part of the frame, but after Holcomb singled with two away he was picked off of first by New to retire the side.

  • Stevenson would reclaim the lead in the home-half of the inning when junior pinch-hitter Mark Terrell reached on an error, freshman Billy McAdam and sophomore Nate Perkins each made their way to bases with bunt singles to load the bags for Murray.
  • He would keep things moving along as he got on thanks to the second miscue of the frame by the guests scoring senior Michael Rhodes who came on to run for Terrell.
  • The next batter was Kessler who earned his RBI the hard way by getting hit by the pitch.
  • His at-bat was followed by a sac fly off the bat of Moore making it 7-4 Mustangs.
  • Holcomb would eventually pop out to bring the rally to a halt.

  • With the hosts, one out away from the win Durland singled to left, but Rachiele popped out to Kidwiler at third to end the game, which earned the win for junior Brady Helsinki who came on in relief in the seventh.

  • W: Brady Helsinki (1-0), L: Bobby New (0-1)
  • Thompson took the no-decision going six innings on six hits giving up four runs (two earned) and four strikeouts.
  • Helsinki got the win going three frames surrendering just one hit.
  • Kidwiler stretched his hitting streak to five games.
  • He, Perkins, and Holcomb were a combined 6-11 with two RBIs and three runs scored.
  • Kessler came up with two RBIs and a run scored while going 1-2 at the plate.
  • New took the loss lasting seven innings issuing ten hits and seven runs (three earned).
  • Christian Seariac was 2-4 for MCLA with a run scored.

  • Stevenson returns to action tomorrow, March 3 when they continue their three-game series with a doubleheader against MCLA at Sugar Field.  It will be an early wake-up for the Mustangs as first pitch of game one is slated for 8am.
