Box Score GREENVILLE, Pa. – Sophomore Landon Shorts totaled 18 kills as the Stevenson University men's volleyball team posted a 3-0 sweep of Thiel College Saturday afternoon in Continental Volleyball Conference play. Set scores were 25-19, 25-20, 25-20.
Stevenson (13-7, 4-2 CVC) won its second straight match and its fifth out of the last six. Shorts hit at a .389 clip on the afternoon and also had seven digs and four blocks (one solo). Senior Nate Ellis and junior Alex Klunk each had six kills, with Ellis notching four block assists. Sophomore Jason Gardner had five kills and eight digs, while senior Nicholas Gross had a team-high nine digs. Freshman Derek Tangorra added eight digs, while senior Kyle Johnson handed out 35 assists.
Thiel (4-9, 2-5 CVC) was led by Mitchell Patterson and Jacob DeRue with nine kills apiece.
Stevenson never trailed in the first set, opening a 19-11 lead on a kill by Gardner. Thiel used a 4-1 spurt to pull within 20-15, but three straight Mustang points, including back-to-back blocks for Ellis and Shorts, made it 23-15. The set ended on a Thiel attack error.
The second set saw 12 ties before three straight Stevenson points gave the guests an 18-15 lead on a Gross service ace. Leading 19-17, Stevenson rattled off four straight points, with a Shorts kill making it 23-17, and another Shorts kill gave the Mustangs a 2-0 lead. The Mustangs never trailed in the third set, breaking open a 9-7 set with five straight points capped by a Gross service ace to build a 14-7 lead. An Ellis kill closed out the match.
Stevenson hit .240 for the match, including .355 in the second set, while limiting the Bobcats to .088 hitting, including hitting under .100 in two of three sets.
The Mustangs are idle until next Friday when they host fourth-ranked Stevens in a 6:00 match at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
