POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Stevenson University men's volleyball team blanked Mount Saint Vincent 3-0 in the second day of the Vassar Invitational Saturday afternoon.  Set scores were 25-15, 25-19, 25-22.

Sophomore Landon Shorts led Stevenson with 14 kills, four digs and three blocks (one solo), while classmate Jason Gardner notched eight kills and five digs.  Senior Michael Fehrs added seven kills, while senior Kyle Johnson had 10 digs to go along with his 34 assists.  Freshman Derek Tangorra tallied nine digs.

Stevenson (9-6) opened a 10-6 lead in the opening set following a block by Johnson and junior Alex Klunk.  The Dolphins (4-6) had back-to-back kills to half the lead before four straight Mustang points gave them a 14-8 lead.  From there, Stevenson gradually pulled away, with a solo block by Shorts closing out the frame.

The Mustangs never trailed in the second set, jumping out to leads of 4-1 and 10-4 following a kill by Klunk.  A block by Shorts and senior Nate Ellis gave the Mustangs a 21-13 lead, which Mount Saint Vincent chipped away at and got down to 24-19 before a kill by senior David Santangelo making it 2-0.

The third set had four lead changes before three straight points by Stevenson capped by an Ellis service ace gave it a 16-13 lead.  The Dolphins cut the lead to one four times, the last at 19-18, before two Shorts kills, a Johnson ace and an MSV attack error stretched the lead to 23-18.  Mount Saint Vincent pulled to within 24-22 before a Fehrs kill closed out the match.

Stevenson hit .280 for the match, including .389 in the second set, while limiting MSV to hitting at a .097 clip, holding the Dolphins under .100 in two of three sets. 

Stevenson returns to action next Friday night when it hosts Cairn for its Continental Volleyball Conference home opener at 7:00 pm at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
