Box Score UNION, N.J. - Highlighted by nine kills on nine attempts, five service aces, four assists and three digs by freshman Landon Shorts, the Stevenson men's volleyball team posted a 25-9, 25-14, 25-21 season opening victory versus Mount Saint Vincent Thursday evening in the Kean Classic at Harwood Arena.
The Mustangs (1-0) improved to 7-1 in season openers since the 2009 season, including second straight under second year head coach Steve Grossnickle.
Twelve different players recorded a kill for Stevenson as they hit .397 for the match, including .529 in the opening set. The Dolphins (0-2) were held to a .000 hitting percentage, which includes -.278 in the first set.
Started by a service ace by senior Rob Wingert, the Mustangs won eight points on his serve, racing out to an 11-1 lead. Mount Saint Vincent won four of its nine points in the opening set on service aces by Stevenson. The Mustangs finished the match with 15 service aces as well as 15 service errors.
The Dolphins took an 8-6 lead in the second set but Stevenson finished on a 19-6 run to take a two sets to none lead. Junior Michael Fehrs totaled two service aces during the run and finished the match with four in addition to his six kills and two block assists.
Wingert finished with 15 assists after taking over for three-time Continental Volleyball Conference All-Conference member David Moler '15.
Stevenson returns to action on Friday, January 15 when the Mustangs face Hunter and host and No. 11 Kean in day two of the Kean Classic. The first match is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
