Mustangs Down Thiel in Regular-Season Finale, Earn No. 2 Seed in CVC Championship

GREENVILLE, Pa. - Led by 12 kills and 11 digs from junior Patrick Schuyler and 11 kills, eight digs and five block assists from sophomore Nate Ellis, the Stevenson men's volleyball team posted a 27-25, 25-16, 20-25, 25-15 Continental Volleyball Conference victory over Thiel Saturday at Beeghly Gymnasium.

The win snapped a three-match losing streak for Stevenson (16-13, 7-5 CVC) who earned the No. 2 seed in next week's CVC Championship hosted by Rutgers-Newark.

The Mustangs trailed for the majority of the first set, falling behind by as much as seven, before a 14-7 run tied it at 24-24. Led by a kill and service ace from Ellis and two Tomcat attack errors, Stevenson scored six of the final seven points to a 1-0 lead.

The second set featured four ties, the last of which came at 10-10 before an 11-1 run by the Mustangs gave them a commanding 18-11 advantage which they turned in to a nine-point victory.

Schuyler had three kills and three blocks in the second set while Ellis added four kills and two blocks.

Trailing 2-0, Thiel (11-13, 4-8 CVC) turned the tables on Stevenson in the third set as it rallied from an early deficit to claim its first victory. The Mustangs scored the first two points and led 9-8 before a 7-2 run by the Tomcats gave them a 15-11 lead that they would not relinquish as they won the set by five on a kill from Dylan Lasher.

Stevenson dominated the fourth set as it jumped out to a 9-1 advantage behind two kills each from Schuyler and Ellis. The Mustangs never let the lead slip below three the rest of the way as they improved their road record to 6-5.

Sophomore Michael Fehrs added 11 kills and five digs while senior Kyle Wisner total seven kills. Senior Scott Morantz totaled 19 digs while senior Davis Moler had 34 assists and eight digs. Junior Kyle Pottieger added 10 digs.

Lasher had 15 kills and 10 digs while John Turner had 15 kills and 11 digs for Thiel.

Stevenson opens play in the 2015 Continental Volleyball Conference Championship on Friday against third-seeded Marymount (Va.) beginning at 5:00 p.m.
