Capanelli, Blackburn Combine for Five Points in 3-0 Victory at Nichols

HARRISVILLE, R.I. - Highlighted by two goals from senior Jessie Capanelli and the third straight shutout by classsmate Sarah Modzelewski, the Stevenson women's hockey team posted a 3-0 non-conference victory versus Nichols Friday evening at Levy Ice Rink.

The Mustangs (8-0-1) have now posted four consecutive shutouts and have held their opponents scoreless for the last 284:48 and have allowed just one goal in the last 375:13. Stevenson also leads Division III in scoring defense allowing just 0.44 goals per game.

Sophomore Chelsea Blackburn scored her team leading 10th goal of the season and 30th of her career 5:41 into the opening period on the first of two assists from senior McKenzie Taggart. The team improves to 23-4 all-time when Taggart records an assist and 17-0 when Blackburn registers a goal.

Capanelli scored twice in the second period, 3:23 apart, and has now recorded a point in eight of the team's nine games. With her two goals, Capanelli surpassed the 20-goal mark in her career, becoming the fourth player in program history to reach that milestone.

Blackburn, who recorded an assist on both of Capenlli's goals, has now totaled five points against the Bison (1-9-0) in four all-time games. Sophomore Allie Bruns also picked up her first point of the season with an assist.

Stevenson's penalty kill remained perfect on the season after killing off all five penalty kill situations, including two in the third period. The Mustangs are 34-for-34 when down a player.

Modzelewski finished with 14 saves, including two right on the doorstep in the final minutes of the game.

Blackburn and Taggart both finished with a plus-three rating while Blackburn won 10 of her 15 face-offs. Seniors Megan Alexander and Erin McLoughlin combined to go 12-for-17 on face-offs.

The Mustangs outshot Nichols, 39-14, including 29-7 over the first two periods. The team has held its opponents to less than 20 shots in six of their nine games and improves 10-1-1 under head coach Tracy Johnson when holding opponents to under 20 shots.

Stevenson completes the two-game series versus the Bison on Saturday, December 5 beginning at 12:40 p.m.
