Box Score 2 BOSTON, Mass. - Stevenson women's ice hockey junior Brooke Webber scored 9:22 into overtime to give the Mustangs their first championship in program history, capturing the Codfish Bowl Cup with a 3-2 victory over host and defending champion UMass Boston Saturday at Beacons Ice Arena.
The win sets a new single-season record for Stevenson (9-4) in its third season after the team won eight games a year ago. The Mustangs also posted their first win in three meetings against the Beacons and remained unbeaten in four all-time overtime contests, improving to 2-0-2.
Webber netted her second goal of the season, both of which have been game-winners, and first since November 22 at SUNY Canton. The former defenseman turned forward now has points in seven games this season with two goals and five assists.
Webber's fifth career goal was assisted by freshman Savannah Sommers and junior Jessie Capanelli.
Freshman Chelsea Blackburn was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player after scoring three goals in two games, including the game-tying goal at 13:42 of the third period on Saturday after UMass Boston had taken a 2-1 lead just 41 seconds earlier.
Blackburn was joined on the All-Tournament team by juniors Sarah Modzelewski and Katie Abbott. Modzelewski earned both victories and totaled 42 saves, including a season-high 36 against the Beacons. Meanwhile, Abbott finished with a goal and two assists.
Abbott scored on the power play at 6:14 of the third period, tying the game at 1-1 and snapping an 0-for-12 drought with the extra man. Capanelli and freshman Monica Pozuc each picked up assists on the play.
Stevenson finished the game 1-for-4 on the power play while its penalty kill held the Beacons scoreless in five attempts. Over the last six games, the Mustangs has held its opponents to just 1-for-19 on the power play.
Stevenson is now 3-3 in three Codfish Bowl appearances.
Kayla Smith and Moe Bradley were named to the All-Tournament Team for UMass Boston. Bradley finished with 50 saves over the two-day event, including 33 on Saturday.
In the consolation game, Chatham knocked off SUNY Canton, 4-3.
Stevenson continues its 10-day road trip when it travels to Manhattanville on Tuesday for a 3:00 p.m., faceoff against the Valiants. Manhattanville won last year's meeting 4-0 at Reisterstown Sportsplex.
