Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson men's basketball freshman Darius Walker posted his second-consecutive double double with a team-high 14 points and 12 rebounds as the top-seeded Mustangs defeated former CAC rival and fourth-seeded Marymount (Va.) 81-75 in the ECAC Division III Southeast Men's Basketball Semifinal Saturday at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
With the win, the Mustangs (20-8) tied the school record for wins in a season. The 2005-06 and 2006-07 teams also finished with 20 wins. The team also posted just their second postseason victory outside of conference tournament play in their 19-year history. The 2005-06 team defeated Baruch in the first round of the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament on Mar. 3, 2006.
After falling behind 11-5, the Stevenson used an 8-0 run to take its first lead of the game, sparked by a three-point play by freshman Ryan Hill and a three-pointer by senior Jeff Holmes. However, Tim Brisco responded with his lone basket of the day, a three-pointer that just beat the shot clock to give Marymount (Va.) a 14-13 lead.
After two made free throws by senior Shaun Nobile to give Stevenson a 21-18 lead, the Mustangs starters returned after sitting for nearly 10 minutes and quickly pushed the team's lead to nine with back-to-back three-pointers by senior Alfonzo Hawkins and sophomore Christian Roberts.
Stevenson, who finished the half 7-for-9 after starting 6-for-17, ended the first half on an 8-2 run to lead 37-25 at the break.
The Mustangs opened the second half on a 12-5 run, going 4-for-6 from the floor and 4-for-5 from the free throw line, to give them their largest lead of the day at 19.
The Saints (16-12) would make a run of their own and get as close as four following a three-pointer by Reed Scott to cap an 11-4 run with 4:46 remaining in the second half. However, that would be the last made field goal for Marymount (Va.) before Jesse Konadu hit what turned out to be a meaningless three-pointer with 13 seconds remaining.
Stevenson, who shot at least 50.0 percent from the field for the 12th time this season, attempted a season-high 43 free throw attempts, the most since Dec. 5, 1997 when they had 45 versus Salisbury.
Walker, who posted his third double double of the season, finished 8-for-10 from the free throw line and added three assists and two blocks. Hawkins finished with 12 points while senior Stefon McCray and Colby Giacubeno added 10 a piece.
Scott led the Saints with 12 points and 13 rebounds while Danny Ferry added a game-high 17 points.
Stevenson will conclude its season when it hosts the winner of third-seeded McDaniel and second-seeded Neumann on Sunday, March 9 beginning at 1:00 p.m.
