Fast Start Carries Mustangs to Third Consecutive Win 5-1 Over Nichols

| Box Score 2

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Led by the line of juniors Katie Abbott and Erin McLoughlin and freshman Monica Pozuc, the Stevenson women's ice hockey team posted its program-best third-straight win as the Mustangs defeated Nichols for second time in three meetings this season with a 5-1 victory Saturday at Reisterstown Sportsplex.

Stevenson (5-2) improved to 3-0 at home this season and is now 5-0 when scoring first and 5-0 when leading after the first period. During the Mustangs' three-game win streak, the nation's eight-ranked scoring offense has outscored its opponents 19-4, including 9-1 in the first period.

Meanwhile, the line of Abbott, McLoughlin and Pozuc has accounted for seven goals, nine assists and a plus-25 rating. The trio totaled two goals and three assists on Saturday as each extended their point streak to three games.

Abbott, who had two first period goals this afternoon, has already tied her career-high for goals in a season, scoring four on just nine shots while posting a plus-9 rating.

McLoughlin, who had one goal and four assists in 35 career games entering this season, leads the team with seven points and five assists through seven games this year.

Abbott started the scoring just 8:38 into the first period off assists from Pozuc and McLoughlin before junior Madison Lange netted her third at 13:02 on what proved to be the game-winner, the first of her career.

Abbott then followed with her fourth of the year just 3:02 later, marking her third career multi-goal goal and second-straight. She also had two goals, including the very first in program history in a 6-2 loss in the team's inaugural game at Buffalo State on Oct. 26, 2012.

Stevenson has outscored its opponents 14-3 in the first period this season and 22-3 over the first two.

Juniors Tori Emoff and Jessie Capanelli added second-period tallies just 38 seconds apart to push the Mustangs' lead to 5-0 with 8:45 remaining in the second period.

Capanelli finished with one goal and one assist while McLoughlin and junior Rachel Martell each had two assists.

Junior Sarah Modzelewski made 19 saves, holding the Bison (4-7) scoreless until the 19:19 mark of the third period when Alyssa Bufis scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season on the power play.

Modzelewski, who improved her record to 3-1 this season and earned her ninth career victory, boasts a 1.00 goals against average and .951 saves percentage in three starts this year.

Stevenson travels to the University of New England next Friday and Saturday where the team is 1-1 in two career meetings. UNE leads the all-time series 3-1 and has won three-straight. Faceoff on Friday is at 7:00 p.m.
