Box Score HARRISONBURG, Va. - After posting a .367 hitting percentage and jumping out to a 1-0 lead after the first set, the Stevenson men's volleyball team fell victim to 17 attack errors and a .188 hitting percentage over the final three as the 11th-ranked Mustangs fell to Thiel Saturday at Eastern Mennonite's Yoder Arena, 25-21, 20-25, 24-26, 22-25.
Stevenson (11-6) fell for the second time in the last three games against the Tomcats after the two teams split their season series a year ago.
As a result of the loss and the other scores from Saturday, all five teams in the CVC East Division are tied with 1-1 conference records.
For the second-straight day, junior Austin Jacoby (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) totaled a season-high 21 kills while posting a .462 hitting percentage and adding 10 digs. Sophomore Kyle Wisner (York, Pa./Central York) added 13 kills and five total blocks as he and Jacoby combined for 34 of the team's 56 kills.
The Mustangs never trailed in the first set, jumping out to an 11-6 lead before scoring the final three on kills by Wisner and Jacoby and a service ace from freshman Patrick Schuyler (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin).
Thiel (9-6, 1-1 CVC) took a 5-1 lead in the second set, but Stevenson used a 9-1 run, highlighted by four kills from Jacoby. However, following a timeout, the Tomcats responded by scoring 11 of the next 14 points to take a 17-13 lead that they would not relinquish.
The third set featured 11 ties and five lead changes. The Mustangs built an 11-6 advantage before Thiel tied the set at 11-11. Stevenson pushed the lead back to four at 18-14 before holding a 23-20 lead on a kill by junior Jon Martin (Lititz, Pa./Warwick).
However, the Tomcats rallied by scoring six of the final seven points to take a 2-1 lead.
Thiel trailed 5-3 in the fourth set, but after scoring three-straight points to take a 6-5 lead, the team would never trail again, leading by as many as six at 20-14.
Schuyler finished with seven kills and 11 digs while Martin had seven kills and 10 digs. Sophomore David Moler (York, Pa./Central York) and freshman Robert Wingert (Hanover Township, Pa./Holy Redeemer) combined for 49 assists with junior Adam Thatcher (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) added 14 digs.
Michael Whitelock had 16 kills and five total blocks to lead Thiel while Dante McCoy had 12 kills and 17 digs.
Stevenson returns home for the first time since February 2 when it welcomes Eastern Mennonite to Owings Mills Gymnasium for a CVC contest on Tuesday beginning at 7:00 p.m.
