Mustangs Tie Sacred Heart on Taggart's Team-Leading Sixth Goal of the Year

Box Score

REISTERSTOWN, Md. - Stevenson women's ice hockey sophomore McKenzie Taggart scored two goals, including the game-tying tally with just 19 seconds remaining in the third period as the Mustangs rallied for a 3-3 tie with Division I Sacred Heart Friday at Reisterstown Sportsplex.

With the tie, Stevenson (2-1-1) remained unbeaten in three home games this season after sweeping its season-opening series with SUNY Canton.

Sophomore Mackenzie Bruch also remained unbeaten in two starts this season, improving to 1-0-1 after making 15 saves, including one on all seven shots she faced in the second period.

Taggart scored her team-leading fifth and sixth goals of the season on Friday and has already equaled her season total from a year ago. She now has 20 points with 12 goals and eight assists in 25 career games, including four goals and five points in four career meetings against the Pioneers.

Sophomore Megan Alexander also finished with two points, netting her first goal of the season with under three minutes remaining in the first period to tie the game at 1-1. She later added an assist on Taggart's second-period goal that gave the Mustangs a 2-1 lead after two periods.

Stevenson held its one goal advantage until the 15:02 mark of the third period when Catie Ladner scored her first of the season on the power play to tie the game at 2-2.

Ladner struck again on the power play just over two minutes later, putting the Pioneers (3-3-1) in front 3-2 with 2:55 remaining off assists from Casey Stathopoulos and Whitney Henderson.

Following a timeout with 49 seconds remaining, Stevenson head coach Tracy Johnson lifted Bruch in favor of the extra skater which led to Taggart's rebound goal in front with 19 seconds left in regulation.

With two goals, Taggart extended her goal scoring streak to five-straight games dating back to last season. Friday also marked her second multi-goal game this season and she now has points in seven of the team's last eight games.

Stevenson outshot Sacred Heart 36-18, including 17-7 during the third period and overtime. With the extra-man goal in the third, the Mustangs also finished 1-for-3 on the power play and have now scored a power play goal in every game this season. Stevenson is 6-for-17 with a man advantage this season, good for 35.3 percent.

The Mustangs and Pioneers conclude their three-game season series on Saturday at Reisterstown Sportsplex. Faceoff is at 5:15 p.m.
