Box Score FREDERICK, Md. - Led by two goals a piece from junior Yianni Sarioglou (Perry Hall, Md./Calvert Hall) and senior Chris Panian (Monkton, Md./John Carroll), the Stevenson men's soccer team held on for a 4-3 victory over Hood and moved one step closer to a playoff spot Wednesday at Thomas Athletic Field.
The Mustangs (8-9-1, 3-4-1 MAC) are currently in a three way tie for fourth place in the conference with Lebanon Valley and Lycoming, all with ten points. Only the top five teams advance to the Commonwealth Conference playoffs.
After a an early Hood goal, the Mustangs scored four straight, including three first half goals. Sarioglou had back-to-back tallies in a seven minute span to give Stevenson a 2-1 lead.
Panian added a late first half goal assisted by junior Ryan Downes (New Market, Md./Linganore) to push the lead to two at the break.
A penalty kick by Panian increased Stevenson's lead to 4-1 at the 57:48 mark but the Blazers (5-10-1, 2-5-1 MAC) would answer with two goals of their own to cut the lead to 4-3. A last second shot to tie the game for Hood was blocked.
The Mustangs outshot Hood 20-13, including 14-7 in the first half, while also holding a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Stevenson will wrap up the regular season on Saturday, November 2 when they travel to face third-place Alvernia beginning at 3:30 p.m.
