Box Score BETHANY, W. Va. - Stevenson men's soccer sophomore Pat Carey (Brooklyn Park, Md./North County) earned his first career shutout in his first career start while picking up his first career point with an assist as the Mustangs opened the 2012 season with a 3-0 victory over host Bethany (WV) Friday at the Fuzzy Williams Memorial Tournament.
The win was the fourth-straight season opening victory for Stevenson (1-0) and the fifth under sixth-year head coach John Plevyak.
All three Mustang goals came from first-year players, including the eventual game-winner from junior Christopher Panian (Monkton, Md./John Carroll) in the 17th minute. Five of the Stevenson scorers all picked up their first points in a Mustang uniform, including three freshmen.
A transfer from Harford Community College, Panian scored on an assist from sophomore Yianni Sarioglou (Perry Hall, Md./Calvert Hall), the 2011 CAC Rookie of the Year at 16:46.
That would be the game's only goal until the 72nd minute when freshman Khristian Hall (Philadelphia, Pa./La Salle) netted his first career tally off an assist from Carey who punted the ball past midfield from inside Stevenson's penalty box.
Carey is the second Mustang goalie to pick up in assist in as many years after current graduate assistant Ryan Flannelly picked up his first career assist versus Penn State Brandywin on Sept. 12, 2011.
Freshman defender Reid Hawkins (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) also got into the scoring in the 82nd minute when he scored his first career goal off a feed from freshman Vincent Conti (Annapolis, Md./DeMatha Catholic).
Carey made a career-high six saves in goal after making four in five appearances a year ago.
Stevenson wraps-up play in the Fuzzy Williams Memorial Tournament on Saturday versus Moravian. Game time is at 1:00 p.m.
