Five-Run Tenth Leads No. 4 Shenandoah Past Stevenson Baseball, 9-4

Box Score

ABERDEEN, Md. - After the Stevenson baseball team rallied to tie the game with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, No. 4 Shenandoah scored five runs in the top of the 10th, including four unearned, as the Hornets escaped a second upset bid by the Mustangs this season with a 9-4 victory Thursday at Yankee Stadium Field.

Stevenson (12-23) was looking for its second win over a nationally-ranked team this season after it snapped a 21-game home winning streak by Johns Hopkins with an 8-4 win over the No. 16 Blue Jays on April 4.

The Mustangs, who lost for just the second time in the last six games, were also aiming for the second win over the Hornets in the last two seasons after posting a 14-12 road victory over No. 7 Shenandoah at Bridgeforth Field on Apr. 22, 2010.

Stevenson led for the most of the game, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first and a 3-1 advantage in the third before the Hornets took its first lead in the top of the seventh after scoring the go-ahead run unearned as the result of Mustang fielding error.

Trailing by one with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Stevenson tied the game on a bases loaded walk by freshman Scott Merkel (Hampstead/Calvert Hall).

Greg Van Sickler led off the top of the 10th with a single up the middle before back-to-back walks by Nick Beall and Corey Nelson loaded the bases with no outs. Tucker Brown drove in Van Sickler with an infield single before Nelson and Beall scored on a fielder's choice and a Stevenson throwing error and Kevin Brashears picked up an RBI with a single to right.

Shenandoah (33-4) scored its final run when pinch-hitter Mike Minch and Brashears executed a double steal of home and second, respectively.

Kyle Scallion pitched the bottom of the 10th to earn the win after entering in relief of Van Sickler in the eighth. Van Sickler, who suffered the loss in last year's meeting, had his first non-decision in 11 starts this season after allowing three runs on 10 hits over 7.0 innings.

Juniors Kyle Van Beek (Bel Air/John Carroll) and Justin Anderson (Shrewsbury, Pa./Calvert Hall) totaled six of Stevenson's 11 hits as both had three apiece. Van Beek was 3-for-4 with a walk and three of the team's five runs while Anderson went 3-for-5 with one run scored.

Junior Tony Prescott (Elkridge/Howard) was 0-for-2 with two RBIs on sacrifice flies in the first and third. He was also intentionally walked in the ninth to load the bases for Markel. Senior Cody Schuchman (Baltimore/Calvert Hall) and freshman Thomas Goulian (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) each had two hits for the Mustangs who left 12 runners on base and were 4-for-16 with runners in scoring position.

Senior Randy Bond (Brandywine/Riverdale Baptist) allowed just three runs on four hits over 5.0 innings in his sixth start of the season while junior Patrick Quinn (Mt. Airy/Linganore) suffered his second loss after surrendering three runs on just one hit over two-thirds of an inning.

Joey Donofrio was 2-for-4 with a solo home run in the fifth to lead nine different Hornets who had at least one hit in the game.

Stevenson travels to Keystone on Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
