WINCHESTER, Va. - Stevenson baseball junior
Steve
Krider (Westminster/Westminster) drove in a
career-high five RBIs, highlighted by a go-ahead three-run homer in
the fifth while sophomore Patrick Quinn (Mt.
Airy/Linganore) earned his seventh save as the Mustangs
upset No. 7 Shenandoah Thursday night, 14-12 at Bridgeforth Field.
The win snapped a three-game losing streak for Stevenson (18-16)
and was its second against a ranked opponent on the road this
season after a 6-4 victory at No. 7 Salisbury on March 27.
Krider went 3-for-6 while junior Cody Schuchman
(Baltimore/Calvert Hall) totaled a career-high four hits,
going 4-for-6 to lead five Mustangs who had at least three hits,
including junior Jeff Bihy
(Baltimore/Eastern Tech) who was 3-for-5 with three RBIs.
Stevenson totaled 14 runs on a season-high 21 hits, two of which
were home runs by Krider and senior George Papuchis
(Damascus/Good Counsel). The two-run blast by Papuchis in
the first gave the Mustangs their first lead and was the 13th of
his career, moving him into sole possession of first place on the
school's career home runs list.
After the Hornets (34-8) scored five runs in the bottom of the
second, Stevenson scored seven runs in the fifth and sixth against
Shenandoah's Greg Van Sickler who leads the team with seven wins in
10 appearances this season.
Van Sickler, who was named the 2010 USA South Pitcher of the
Year and 2009 ABCA third team All-America, was tagged for seven
runs on 14 hits over 4.0 innings.
Stevenson sent 10 batters to the plate in the fifth, totaling
seven hits, including Krider's first home run of the season and his
first since Mar. 8, 2008 that gave the Mustangs a 6-5 lead they
would not relinquish.
Krider added a two-run single in the sixth to push the lead to
four before Stevenson added five more runs over the seventh and
eighth, extending the margin to 14-6.
The Hornets, who won the NCAA South Region championship a year
ago and advanced to the Division III College World Series, made
things interesting with five runs in the eighth and another in the
ninth.
However, Quinn worked the Mustangs out of a jam with the tying
run at the plate in the ninth after getting Cory Nelson to line to
shortstop Ryan Baione
(Waldorf/Westlake), ending the game with a runner on
second.
Senior Derrick Nason
(Catonsville/Reservoir) earned his third win after
scattering seven hits and allowing six runs over 5.0 innings.
Stevenson will play its second consecutive contest against a
team ranked in the top 10 on Friday when it travels across town to
face No. 1-ranked Johns Hopkins who has won 23-straight. First
pitch is at 3:30 p.m.
The combined record of the Hornets and Blue Jays is 64-11.
Schedule Note: Stevenson announced on Thursday
that its three-game series with Methodist scheduled for Saturday
and Sunday will now take place at Methodist beginning with a
doubleheader on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
