STEVENSON, Md. - Stevenson men's basketball
junior guard Andy Shelly (York, Pa./West York)
totaled 11 points and six rebounds, both career-highs, but a 17-1
run to start the second half gave Marymount (Va.) a 16-point lead
en route to an 82-60 victory Wednesday night at Student Union
Gymnasium.
The win was the fourth-straight for the Saints (9-6, 4-2 CAC)
who were led by 22 points and 10 rebounds from reigning CAC Player
of the Week Tarek Ammoury.
The first half featured five ties and three lead changes after
the Mustangs opened the half on an 11-3 run over the first four
minutes to take an eight-point lead.
The Saints tied the game for the first time at 15-15 with 14:00
remaining following a 12-4 run and led by as many as five before
Stevenson rallied to tie the game at 26-26 with 7:02 to play.
Both teams would go back-and-forth before a layup by Shelly with
43 seconds tied the game at 32-32 going into halftime.
However, Marymount built a 16-point advantage in the first five
minutes of the second half after the Mustangs missed their first
eight shots in falling behind 49-33. They also missed three of four
from the free throw line.
Depsite the bad start, Stevenson (1-13, 1-4 CAC) rallied with a
16-6 run to pull within six at 55-49 with 7:10 remaining before the
Saints answered with a 17-5 run to push the lead to 18 with 3:24
left.
Shelly was one of two players in double figures for the Mustangs
as junior guard Broderick Hill (Bowie/Bishop
McNamara) added 10. Freshman forward Danny Murphy
(Severn/Glen Burnie) had nine.
Freshman forward Clifton Jones (Bowie/Archbishop
Spaulding) had seven points and a career-high eight
rebounds.
Ammoury was one of four players in double figures for Marymount
as Ronnie Barbour and Chapmen Canady each had 11 and Stephen
Simoneau added 10.
Stevenson plays the first of two road games in three days when
they travel to York (Pa.) on Saturday. Game time is at 7:00 p.m.
