GLEN BURNIE, Md. - Greg Van Sickler struck out
a career-high 13 batters and allowed just six hits in picking his
seventh win in nine starts this season to lead No. 21 Shenandoah to
a 9-0 victory over the Stevenson University baseball team Thursday
night at Bachman Sports Complex on Senior Day.
The Hornets (32-8), who are also ranked third in the NCAA South
Region, set a new school record for wins in a season by
improving their record to 24-1 against
non-conference opponents this season.
Van Sickler has not allowed a run over his last 19.0 innings
dating back to a scoreless fourth inning against North Carolina
Wesleyan on April 10. Wednesday's win was his team-leading
seventh of the season and his second by shutout this season.
A week ago today, Van Sickler allowed just four hits
and struck out eight in a 6-0 victory over Greensboro in the
Shenandoah's opening game of the USA South Athletic Conference
championship.
Meanwhile, the Hornet offense provided the only run Van Sickler
would need in the top of the first when Scott Van
Dusseldorp hit a two-out single to left to score Kevin
Brashears after Van Sickler drew a walk.
Shenandoah added four more runs in the second, highlighted by
Brashears' inside-the-park two-run homer to center field.
Junior Derrick Nason (Catonsville/Reservoir)
would hold the Hornets scoreless over 4.2 innings and allowed just
two hits after entering in relief of sophomore Steve Krider
(Westminster/Westminster) who was making his seventh start
of the season.
However, Stevenson (17-22) could not get anything started
against Van Sickler and advanced just four runners into scoring
position all night, including just one past second.
Shenandoah added four runs in the top of the ninth against
junior Brian Spinazzola (Baltimore/Boys Latin),
two of which came on an RBI single by Jesse Henry.
Henry finished the game 2-for-5 with three RBIs while Brashears
was 1-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs. Van Dusseldorp also drove
in two runs.
Freshman Justin Anderson (Shrewsbury, Pa./Calvert
Hall) totaled three of Stevenson's six hits as he went
3-for-4 while senior Griffin Stewart (Reisterstown/Bel
Air), junior George Papuchis (Damascus/Good
Counsel) and sophomore Chris Maienshein
(Finksburg/Westminster) each had one hit.
The Mustangs return to action on Monday when they travel across
town to Johns Hopkins for a nine-inning, non-conference contest
with the Blue Jays beginning at 3:30 p.m.
