STEVENSON, Md. - Tarek Ammoury scored a
team-high 15 points and his two free throws with 0.1 seconds
remaining gave Marymount (Va.) a crucial 68-64 road victory over
the Stevenson University men's basketball team Wednesday night at
Carolyn Manuszak Student Union Gymnasium.
The win was just the second in nine road games this season for
the Saints (11-11, 6-7 CAC) who moved into fourth place in the
CAC, tying them with Salisbury with three conference games
remaining. The top six teams advance to the 2009 CAC Men's
Basketball Championship.
Meanwhile, Stevenson (6-16, 5-8 CAC) fell into a tie for
the sixth and final playoff spot with York (Pa.). However, the
Mustangs own the tiebreaker thanks to its season sweep of the
Spartans.
Junior guard Greg Woody (Baltimore/Mount Saint
Joseph) scored a game-high 24 points and had five
three-pointers to lead three players in double figures. Senior
center Kerry Dugan (Sparks/Hereford) added 12
points and four rebounds while senior Greg Collins
(Baltimore/Western Tech) had 11.
Freshman Keith Holtman (Baltimore/Eastern), who
leads the CAC in blocks, added seven more on Wednesday and now has
42 for the season. He also added five points and five rebounds.
The Mustangs trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half
and by eight at halftime, but a 14-2 run over the first three-plus
minutes of the second half gave them a two-point advantage, 39-37
with 16:44 left.
In a game that featured 10 ties and 11 lead changes, Woody tied
the game for the last time at 62-62 on his fifth three-pointer
with 2:45 to play.
However, Stevenson missed its final three attempts from the
floor while the Saints scored their final four points from the free
throw line to win its fifth game out of the last seven.
Marymount held a 43-32 advantage in rebounding which
led to a 13-6 edge in second chance points. The Saints also had a
34-20 margin in points in the paint and got 27 points from its
bench led by 13 points from Elvis Ellis.
Ammoury added 10 rebounds to finish with his second double
double of the season. Rockwell Moody grabbed a game-high 12
rebounds.
Stevenson plays its final regular season home game on Saturday
when it hosts CAC rival Salisbury beginning at 4:00 p.m. The Sea
Gulls lost on the road at Gallaudet Wednesday night, 80-70.
