OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Director of Athletics,
Jordan Hoover announced a leadership transition within the Stevenson University Football program, as
Josh Hoeg will take the helm as the new Head Football Coach effective Thursday morning.
After more than 16 years of dedicated service to Stevenson Athletics, Head Football Coach
Ed Hottle will be stepping down to pursue a new opportunity as Chief of Athletics with the Anne Arundel County Department of Recreation and Parks. Coach Hottle became Stevenson's first Head Football Coach in November 2009 and guided the program through a developmental year in 2010 before the Mustangs began intercollegiate competition in Fall 2011.
"Coach Hottle's impact on Mustang Football is historic, and we are deeply grateful for his leadership, vision, and commitment to our student-athletes since the program's inception," said Hoover.
Under Hottle's leadership, Stevenson Football quickly emerged as a consistent contender, earning 10 consecutive postseason appearances and compiling an 88–63 overall record. The program reached a historic milestone in 2016 with its first Middle Atlantic Conference Championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance—just the sixth season in program history. That achievement earned Hottle MAC Coach of the Year honors.
Prior to Stevenson, Hottle served as head coach at Gallaudet University, where he posted a 27–20 record over five seasons. He began his coaching career in 1999 at his alma mater, Frostburg State University, before additional stops at Calvert High School and Gallaudet. "We are profoundly grateful for Coach Hottle's foundational role in building Stevenson Football and for his support as we navigate this transition," said Hoover.
With the transition, Hoover announced the appointment of
Josh Hoeg as Stevenson University's new Head Football Coach. Hoeg will serve as just the second Head Coach of the Stevenson football program since its inaugural season in 2010. Hoeg has been an integral part of the program, serving as the Associate Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator since 2019, and leading the recruitment efforts of the program over his last 7 seasons. "We are confident that Josh's leadership, experience, and passion for developing student-athletes will continue to elevate Mustang Football and our athletes both on and off the field." noted Hoover.
Hoeg joined Stevenson Football in April 2019 as Offensive Coordinator following seven successful seasons at Gannon University in Erie, Pennsylvania. His extensive collegiate coaching background in Division II and Division III, spanning coaching, player development and recruiting, has well prepared him for his new role as the Head Coach of the Mustangs.
"It is an incredible honor to be named the head football coach at Stevenson University. I want to thank President Elliot Hirshman, Vice President Jim Mustard, and Director of Athletics
Jordan Hoover for this opportunity," said Hoeg. "Stevenson University is a special place filled with extraordinary people. The combination of career-focused education, location, and commitment to Athletics is second to none. My family and I are excited to engage the campus community, our alumni, and especially the amazing players here at Stevenson to build a culture of academic and athletic excellence, integrity, and success."
Since Hoeg joined the Stevenson Football as Associate Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator, the program has received multiple accolades. On the regional front, the offense has tabbed one All-ECAC Division III Team honoree, two student-athletes named D3football.com All-Region 1 First Team, four D3football.com All-Region 1 Second Team, and one D3football.com All-Region 1 Third Team. In the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC), 35 student-athletes have been named to all-conference teams, with
Dillon Johnson being named Rookie of Year as a wide receiver for the Mustangs in 2024. Hoeg's offensive tactics led Stevenson to a 40-26 record, a .650-win percentage, since his arrival prior to the 2019 season.
At Gannon, prior to joining Stevenson, he served as Offensive Coordinator and Assistant Head Coach. During his tenure at Gannon, he coached 5 All-Americans and 16 All-Conference selections, including two PSAC West Offensive Players of the Year (2014 and 2017).
Before Gannon, Hoeg spent four seasons at Wabash College as Offensive Coordinator, Quarterbacks Coach, and Recruiting Coordinator. Hoeg helped lead the Little Giants to a 39–7 record, three NCAA Division III Tournament appearances, and two North Coast Athletic Conference championships. His coaching journey also includes stops at Lake Forest College and his alma mater, Coe College, where he worked with wide receivers and served as video coordinator.
In the summer of 2011, Hoeg also contributed to bringing American football to the international stage, serving as running backs coach for the USA National Football Team during its undefeated run to the 2011 World Championship in Austria, where he helped guide the team to a 4–0 finish. A 2004 graduate of Coe College, Coach Hoeg was a standout wide receiver and team captain. He played a key role in the program's first NCAA Tournament win in 2002 and led the team in 2003 with an average of 21.4 yards per reception. He later earned his Master of Arts in Teaching while serving as a graduate assistant.
"I know that our entire Stevenson Athletics community—student-athletes, alumni, families, staff, and fans—joins me in thanking Coach Hottle for his extraordinary contributions and wishing him continued success," said Hoover. "We are equally excited to welcome Josh Hoeg into his new leadership role as we build upon our proud tradition and look ahead to the future of Mustang Football."
