Mustangs split on day one of Stevenson Invitational

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson Women's Beach Volleyball hosted Erskine and Lancaster Bible Colleges today to kick off the 2024 Stevenson Invitational. After losing a hard-fought 3-2 battle with Division II Erskine, the Mustangs bounced back to defeat the Chargers 5-0.

Miranda Mueck and Nicolette Fuglestad notched a huge victory for the Mustangs at the threes, defeating the Flying Fleet's Dutterer/Davis 21-13 and 21-14. Stevenson's other win came from fifth flight Scarlett Dunn and Makala Thompson who finished in sets of 21-18 and 24-22. 

In exhibition, Claire Thompson and Brianna West made their season debut with a 2-0 victory (22-20, 21-19).

Fourth flight Sam Simmers and Olivia Simon battled back from a first set loss with a 21-15 win of their own to force a third set, but ultimately fell short. Maddie Clouser and Hannah Naja fell in a pair of 21-18 sets at the twos and first pair Caleigh Bernota and Sima Kahoussi were defeated 21-10 and 21-17.

The Mustangs' performance in the second match of the day was dominant from start to finish. Claire Thompson and Brianna West collected their second 2-0 win of the day in exhibition, finishing 21-8 and 21-11. Makala Thompson and Scarlett Dunn allowed 12 and ten points against in their two sets as the fifth pair, earning their second victory on the day as well. Sam Simmers and Olivia Simon allowed a mere five points against in their first set, winning the second 21-14.

Miranda Mueck and Nicolette Fuglestad were the first to best their opponents in the second round of matches, doing so at the threes in sets of 21-9 and 21-3. Their 12 points against were the fewest allowed in competition today. Maddie Clouser and Hannah Naja followed suit as the second flight, downing the Chargers 21-5 and 21-10. Rounding out the sweep were Caleigh Bernota and Sima Kahoussi, taking wins of 21-11and 21-16.

The split puts the Mustangs at 19-7 heading into their final two matches of the regular season. In tomorrow's senior day celebration, Stevenson faces Erskine College at noon and the University of Lynchburg at 4 p.m.

Next weekend, the Mustangs return to Tavares, Florida for the 2024 AVCA Division III Small College Beach Championships.
