Beach Volleyball splits in final spring break matches

LAKELAND, Fla. - Stevenson Women's Beach Volleyball rounded out their spring break trip today with a doubleheader against Florida Southern College and Palm Beach State College. The Mustangs were dealt a reverse sweep against the Mocs, but bounced back in the second match for comeback wins in three flights to earn a 5-0 victory.

The Mustangs' second flight of Maddie Clouser and Hannah Naja were the first of two pairs to win their respective matchups, going 21-18 and 21-14. Joining Clouser and Naja in the win category were Miranda Mueck and Giulia Viglietta as the duo won their first set 21-13 and their third 15-9.

In exhibition, Makala Thompson and Scarlett Dunn came back from a first set loss to win 21-13 and 20-18.

The loss did not discourage the Mustangs, however, as they went on to win 5-0. Though they shut the Panthers out, Stevenson battled hard as five of six flights played three sets.

The lone pair that did not need a third set was that of Sima Kahoussi and Caleigh Bernota. The Stevenson second flight won 21-16 and 21-12.

Maddie Clouser and Hannah Naja won their first set 21-18 before Palm Beach reversed the score in the second. Clouser and Naja made sure to go undefeated on the day, coming back in the third to win 15-13.

The Mustangs' first flight of Taylor Jones and Nicolette Fuglestad were defeated 21-13 in their first set, but came back for convincing 21-15 and 15-9 wins. Stevenson's fourth flight of Miranda Mueck and Giulia Viglietta went the distance in the first set, ultimately falling short 22-20. Mueck and Viglietta would go on to win both of their next sets 21-15 and 15-11, keeping the win streak alive.

Olivia Simon and Sam Simmers won their second and third sets 21-13 and 18-16, respectively, having come back from a 21-18 first-set loss. Stevenson's sixth flight of Makala Thompson and Scarlett Dunn also went three sets, winning their second 21-18 and third 15-8.

The split puts the Mustangs at 12-5 on the season with a busy pair of weekends coming up. Next Friday and Saturday, Stevenson will head to Berry College (Ga.) for matches against Huntingdon and Hendrix as well as the hosting Knights. They will finish the month of March closer to home with a four-match slate at Liberty University against the Flames, Richard Bland College, and University of Lynchburg.
