TAVARES, Fla. - Stevenson Women's Beach Volleyball started their week of spring break competition today at Hickory Point Beach with a doubleheader against Lake Sumter State College. The Mustangs would play to a pair of hard-fought victories, finishing 5-0 and 3-2 on the day.
In the first match, three flights went to three sets, all of which finished within two points of each other. The second pairing of Hannah Naja and Maddie Clouser battled back from a first set loss to win 21-17 and 15-13 while Giulia Viglietta and Miranda Mueck did the same, coming from behind to beat their opponents 23-21 and 15-13. Caleigh Bernota and Sima Kahoussi won their first and third sets as the third flight, 21-11 and 16-14 with an 18-21 loss in the second.
The first pairing of Taylor Jones and Nicolette Fuglestad dominated their two sets, going 21-13 and 21-8. In the fifth flight, Olivia Simon and Sam Simmers notched a convincing 21-8 win before finishing off Lake Sumter's Martineau and Watson 21-19. In exhibition, Makala Thompson and Scarlett Dunn went 21-9 and 23-21 to complete the sweep.
The second match saw all six flights go just two sets, but Lake Sumter battled back to try to earn the split. First flight Taylor Jones and Nicolette Fuglestad won both sets 21-15, as did fifth flight Olivia Simon and Sam Simmers. Fourth flight Miranda Mueck and Giulia Viglietta went on to win 21-15 and 21-18 while Makala Thompson and Scarlett Dunn cruised to sets of 21-9 and 21-11 as the sixth flight.
Stevenson's two losses came in the second and third flights, though each set ended with scores four points or less apart.
The pair of wins put the Mustangs at 8-3 so far this season. They look to continue their win streak as they travel to Saint Leo on Tuesday, March 12th to face Saint Leo University and Barry University at 10 a.m. and 12 p.m.
