BABSON PARK, Fla. - Stevenson Men's Beach Volleyball headed to Webber International University for the annual Webber Invitational, where they faced the hosting Warriors, as well as Reinhardt University, on opening day.
After facing Webber earlier in the season at Liberty University in a 5-0 loss, the Mustangs battled to steal two sets from the Warriors this morning. The third pair of Jay Hyman and Ryan Thenell took Webber's Galmes and Hitchens to three sets, ultimately defeating them by scores of 21-16 in the second set and a hard-fought 23-21 final in the 15-point third set.
Doug Hines and Anthony Pezzino followed Hyman and Thenell, obtaining the same result. Hines and Pezzino won their first set 21-16 before Webber would fight to stay alive in the second, but the Mustang duo came back in the third for a 15-13 win.
The Mustangs dominated Reinhardt in their second matchup of the day, with all but one match ending in a two-set sweep.
John Ferraro and Tim Flanagan won big with sets of 21-16 and 21-13 as Stevenson's first pair. Second pair Jack Braverman and Aidan O'Brien also swept their opponents with sets of 21-18 and 21-17.
Hyman and Thenell recorded their second win of the day after downing the Reinhardt pair of Litchy and Sarmiento 23-21 and 21-17 before Hines and Pezzino took their second victory in sets of 22-20 and 21-17.
With the sweep on the line, Tanner Laukhuff and Justin Novoa rounded out the Mustangs' win with a three-set duel, ending with wins of 21-13 and 15-8.
The Mustangs will finish their trip to Florida with more competition against the hosting Warriors tomorrow to kick off their October 2023 campaign.
