LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Stevenson men's beach volleyball team (4-4) wrapped up play at the Liberty University Invitational over the weekend, finishing with a 1-3 record.
The Mustangs opened competition on Friday with a commanding 5-0 victory over Wingate. In the No. 1 pair, RC Getteau and Tanner Laukhuff secured a two-set win (21-12, 21-15). Kevin Kouchoukos and Ryan Harrington followed with another straight-sets victory (21-16, 21-9). In the No. 3 slot, Jackson Bones and Jacob Sledz earned a 2-0 win (21-16, 21-18), while JD Sarmuksnis and Adam DeRubertis also swept their match in two sets. Rounding out the lineup, Charles Signa and Finnegan Keon claimed the fifth point for Stevenson with scores of 21-8 and 21-9.
On Saturday, Stevenson dropped a tight 2-3 contest to Erskine. Getteau and Laukhuff fell in three sets at the topflight, while Kouchoukos and Harrington battled to a 2-1 win (21-11, 19-21, 15-12) in the No. 2 pair. Bones and Sledz were edged in straight sets, but Sarmuksnis and DeRubertis pulled out a three-set victory. In the decisive match, Signa and Keon fought hard but came up just short (21-19, 17-21, 13-15).
The Mustangs then fell 0-5 to Webber, with the No. 2 pair pushing their match to three sets before narrowly dropping the decider, 9-15.
In their final contest of the weekend, Stevenson was defeated 1-3 by Liberty. The Mustangs' lone win came from Kouchoukos and Harrington at the No. 2 flight, who prevailed in three sets (23-21, 19-21, 18-6).
In extra sixes play, Stevenson went 2-1 on the weekend — earning a 2-0 win over Wingate (21-11, 21-13), a 2-1 victory against Erskine (21-19, 19-21, 15-10), and a straight-set loss to Webber (17-21, 17-21).
The Mustangs return home next weekend to host the Stevenson Invitational on October 10–11. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Friday at Mustang Beach.
