LYNCHBURG, Va. - Men's Beach Volleyball rounded out the Liberty Invitational this morning with matches against Webber International University (Fla.) and the Flames once more. Having lost to Webber 5-0 and defeated Liberty 4-1, the Mustangs finish the invitational in second.
Jay Hyman and Ryan Thenell snagged a set win against Webber, bouncing back from a 21-12 loss to win 21-16 and even the score. Webber ultimately pulled ahead in set three, and all other matches were two-set sweeps.
Stevenson took down Liberty yet again on their own court, starting with the first Mustang pair of John Ferraro and Tim Flanagan downing their competition in quick fashion. Their two sets ended with scores of 21-12 and 21-16, respectively.
Hyman and Thenell took their match to three sets, winning the second 21-16 once again.
Jack Braverman and Aidan O'Brien went into extended point play to win their first set 24-22 before winning the second 21-12 as the third pair.
Fourth pair Doug Hines and Anthony Pezzino had another strong showing in their sweep, allowing just 15 and 11 points against.
Kevin Kouchoukos and JD Sarmuksnis notched another win today against a new pair of Flames. After a 21-19 first set, Kouchoukos and Sarmuksnis dominated in a quick 21-13 set to end the match.
The Mustangs finish opening weekend with a 3-1 record heading into next weekend's USA Volleyball Collegiate Beach Challenge. Action starts on Friday, September 15th.
