Women's Soccer Takes on Costa Rica

Costa Rica - In May 2023, the Stevenson Women's Soccer team embarked on an unforgettable journey to Costa Rica. Organized by Costa Rica Soccer Tours, this trip offered them a chance to play two international soccer matches and create lifelong memories.

On the first day, the team left Mustang Stadium in the early morning and traveled to San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica. That evening, they enjoyed a delicious meal at a local restaurant, immersing themselves in the country's traditional cuisine. To their delight, they also witnessed a captivating performance by a Costa Rican dance group and even joined in the fun!

The following day, they had a training session with Liga Deportiva Alajuelense (LDA), a professional soccer team from the Alajuela province. It took place at LDA's impressive training facility, led by a skilled Costa Rican coach associated with the team. They also had the opportunity to meet some of the professional players from LDA. Afterward, the team explored the historic district of San Jose, creating lasting memories by visiting souvenir shops and forming connections with the locals. These experiences allowed them to bring back special items such as LDA soccer jerseys or Costa Rican national team jerseys.

During their stay, they played their first friendly match against Dimas FF, the top-ranked club team in Costa Rica. Despite the intense competition, the game showcased the team's determination and skill. Freshman Caitlin Bridgers, along with senior Samantha Wilson and Cassidy Butler, scored goals in a hard-fought and well-played match. Although they didn't emerge as victors, Cassidy Butler was recognized as the team's MVP, a great honor bestowed upon her by the Dimas team. It was an incredible start to their tropical adventure in Costa Rica.

On the third day, the team began with a delightful breakfast of fresh local fruits. They then visited an underprivileged community to volunteer and teach soccer to the children. The excitement and joy of the kids' anticipation filled the air upon their arrival at the school in San Juan. The children had decorated the gymnasium with balloons, signs, and heartfelt greeting cards for the players, coaches, and families. In small groups, they taught the children various soccer skills and enjoyed their company. The bonds formed were so strong that some kids returned repeatedly to certain players' stations. Snacks, drinks, and autographs were shared, and the team made donations to the school, ensuring the children had vegetables for their lunches. This moving experience left a profound impact on the Stevenson group, with tears of gratitude and emotion shed throughout the day.

After their volunteer work, they embarked on a three-hour bus journey, making a stop at a local market to purchase fresh coconut water, fruit, and snacks for the remainder of the ride. They reached the Magic Mountain hotel in La Fortuna, situated amidst the rainforest and offering a breathtaking view of a volcano. Later in the evening, they visited the Baldi Hot Springs, where they indulged in pools and waterslides heated by the nearby volcano.

The fourth day began with an early morning start and a visit to the stunning La Fortuna Waterfall. Trekking through the rainforest, they descended over 500 stairs to reach the spectacular natural wonder. Everyone enjoyed swimming and relaxing in the refreshing water. Despite the challenge of climbing the 500 steps back up, the team reveled in the amazing experience.

In the evening, they boarded the bus for their second game against San Carlos FF, another exceptional team. The Mustangs displayed their grit and determination, coming back from a 2-0 deficit at halftime to secure a 2-2 tie with goals from freshman Kamille Purcell and junior Shania Hyatt. Cassidy Butler's outstanding performance once again earned her the MVP recognition from the coaches and players of San Carlos. Following the game, they were honored with a gift of fresh fruit as a token of appreciation from San Carlos FF.

On the fifth day, they departed early for a thrilling zip-lining adventure. Along the way, they made a stop at a charming souvenir shop, indulging in Costa Rican smoothies and ice cream. The zip-lining tour at Diamente Eco Adventure Park in Guanacaste provided breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean as they soared through the treetops at exhilarating speeds.

The sixth day was all about relaxation as they enjoyed the sun and the beautiful Flamingo Beach. The Margaritaville Flamingo Beach Resort in Guanacaste provided a picturesque setting for the team to unwind and appreciate the local wildlife, including raccoons, lizards, crabs, and various bird species. The day also included a competitive game of pool volleyball, with members of the resort joining in the fun.

On the seventh day, they took a trip to the beach town of Tamarindo, where they had the opportunity to shop, indulge in ice cream, and enjoy a stunning sunset horseback ride. The scenic beauty of the town and the memorable sunset created the perfect setting for their last official evening together.

The eighth day marked the journey back to San Jose, where the airport is located. Although it was a long day of travel, the team admired the beautiful scenery along the way. They spent the evening at the Crowne Plaza hotel, reflecting on their incredible journey and savoring their last night together.

The team expressed gratitude to their driver, Victor, and their tour guides, Sammy and Lucy, as well as Costa Rica Soccer Tours for organizing this amazing experience.
