OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Stevenson women's beach volleyball squad finished up a weekend with three wins, celebrating their senior class. The squad notched two wins over University of Lynchburg and split with Berry College.
The Mustangs started off the weekend with a 4-1 victory over the Lynchburg Hornets on Friday morning. In the first flight,
Shannon Baily and
Taylor Jones grabbed both sets with 21-10 and 21-18 wins.
Rileigh Kimball and
Miranda Mueck fell in set two, as
Nicolette Fuglestad and
Makala Thompson took the third flight with two big wins. In the fourth pairing,
Maddie Clouser and
Hannah Naja battled to three sets with the Hornets to notch a 2-1 victory.
Sam Simmers and
Caleigh Bernota capped off the victory in flight #5 with 21-6 and 21-7 decisions.
In Friday's second match, the Mustangs fell to Berry 1-4. In the first flight, Bail and Jones fell 12-16 and 23-21in the hard-fought match up. In the second pairing, Kimball and Mueck took down the Vikings 21-8 and 21-17. Fuglestad and Thompson were down by just two points in both sets and fell in the threes. Clouser and Seno matched up in the fourth flight and fell in both sets by just two points as well, as Simmers and Bernota dropped in both sets in the fifth pairing.
The Mustangs started off Saturday morning with a 5-0 sweep over Berry. Baily and Jones put up a battle to take victory in the first flight in two close sets, as Kimball and Mueck took the win in the second pairing 21-18 in both sets. In the third flight, Fuglestad and Thompson notched two big victories with a 21-13 win in set one and a 21-9 win in set two. Clouser and Naja sat in flight #4 and notched 21-15 and 21-14 decisions. In the fifth pairing, Simmers and Bernota dueled with the Vikings to three sets to slot a 2-1 victory.
Stevenson concluded the weekend with a 3-2 decision over Lynchburg. Baily and Jones dueled with the Hornets to a third set and fell 1-2. In the second pairing, Kimball and Mueck put up 21-16 and 22-20 wins, while Fuglestad and Thompson took the third flight 21-9 and 21-6. Clouser and Naja fell in a hard-fought three set battle in the fourth pairing, but Simmers and Bernota prevailed with a 2-1 win over three sets in the fifth flight to secure the 3-2 win.
The Mustangs will look to prepare for the AVCA Division III National Championship next weekend. Seeds and Schedule will be announced once released by the AVCA.
