TAVARES, Fla. – The Stevenson women's beach volleyball split the weekend at the AVCA Small College Beach Championships and finished the weekend slotted third, after four matches played to decision. On day one during pool play, the Mustangs beat the Lake Sumter Lake Hawks 3-0, but fell to Huntingdon in the afternoon 2-3. In the morning of Championship bracket play, Stevenson fell in the morning to Hendrix 1-3, and then fought to a 3-0 victory over Huntingdon in consolation.
In the 3-0 decision over Lake Sumter,
Shannon Baily and
Taylor Jones grabbed a 2-0 win in the first pairing. In the second flight,
Rileigh Kimball and
Miranda Mueck fought to three sets to take a 2-1 win over the Lake Hawks. The fourth flight capped off the 3-0 win for the Mustangs as
Maddie Clouser and
Hannah Naja grabbed 21-18 and 21-16 wins. Due to playing to decision, the third and fifth flights did not play.
Against Huntingdon on Saturday afternoon, the Mustangs battled through all five pairings in the 1-4 loss. In flight #1, Baily and Jones battled to three sets, but fell in the first and third. Kimball and Mueck slotted 21-14 and 21-9 wins, while in the third pairing,
Nicolette Fuglestad and
Makala Thompson fell 26-28 and 21-23. Clouser and Naja walked with two huge set victories in the fourth flight, but
Sam Simmers and
Caleigh Bernota fell in flight #5 1-2 after battling through a tough three sets.
In the matchup against Hendrix on Sunday morning, Baily and Jones took two close wins with 23-21 and 21-19 victories. In the third flight, Fuglestad and Thompson fell in two sets, as Clouser and Naja fell 1-2 in the fourth pairing. Bernota and Simmers sat in the fifth pairing and fell 1-2 to Hendrix. The second flight did not compete, as Hendrix notched the 3-1 decision.
In the consolation match up against Huntingdon, the Mustangs slotted a 3-0 revenge victory. Baily and Jones notched 21-13 and 21-17 wins in the first flight, as Fuglestad and Thompson grabbed 21-16 and 21-15 wins in the third pairing. The fourth pairing clinched the victory for the Mustangs, as Clouser and Naja grabbed 21-10 and 21-13 wins. The second and fifth flightsd did not compete due to the 3-0 decision.
