Saint Leo, FL. – The Stevenson women's beach volleyball team lost to Saint Leo University Thursday 4-1, but then came back to take down Eckerd College with a 3-2 score. This would be the first time in program history winning to NCAA Division ll, Eckerd College.
In the first match-up against Saint Leo University,
Shannon Baily and
Taylor Jones started off strong in set one, winning 21-16, but then fell short in the next two sets.
Rileigh Kimball and
Miranda Mueck lost both sets in the second flight.
Makala Thompson and
Nicolette Fuglestad battled their way through in the third flight winning set two 20-22, but then, unfortunately, fell short in set three, 15-9. Similarly,
Hannah Naja and
Maddie Clouser won only set two in the fourth flight, 21-13. In flight five,
Caleigh Bernota and
Sam Simmers dropped both sets in a close encounter with set one 21-14 and set two 21-18. In the exhibition,
Sarah Straub and
Juliana Seno also lost both sets to Saint Leo.
In the match-up against Eckerd College, Baily and Jones pulled out a huge win in flight one winning 2-1. In flight two, Kimball and Mueck fell 2-0. Thompson and Fuglestad had a tough fight in the third flight but fell short after set two, with their final score 2-1. Naja and Clouser clutched a win for the Mustangs in set two, 21-14, and set three, 15-12. In flight five, Bernota and Simmers took home another victory in set two, 21-17 and set three, 15-13. The final score was 3-2, bringing in a huge program win for the Mustangs.
The Mustangs will go against Florida Southern College and St. Johns River State College on Saturday. The squad will take on Florida Southern at 10 a.m. and St. Johns River at 12 p.m. These will be the last of the matches in the Florida Southern Tri-Match.
