VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Stevenson women's beach volleyball team started their season with two big 5-0 sweeps over Bryant & Stratton College and Gaston College on Friday afternoon.
Against Bryant & Stratton,
Rileigh Kimball and
Miranda Mueck sat in flight #1, taking both matches 21-16 and 21-10. In flight #2,
Shannon Baily and
Taylor Jones fought a close battle to take both matches 21-14 and 21-19.
Makala Thompson and
Nicolette Fuglestad were slotted in flight #3 and won both matches 21-10 and 21-11. Flight #4 was won 21-6 and 21-12 by
Hannah Naja and
Maddie Clouser. In flight #5,
Caleigh Bernota and
Sam Simmers took a 21-15 and 21-10 win to finalize the 5-0 sweep for the Mustangs.
Against Gaston, Kimball and Mueck took two strong wins 21-8 and 21-7 over the Rhinos. In flight #2, Baily and Jones put up 21-6 and 21-13 victories. Thompson and Fuglestad claimed a 21-6 and 21-10 win in flight #3. In flight #4, Naja and Clouser fought to a close 21-17 win in their first match but capped off a 21-5 win in the second. Bernota and Simmers capped off the sweep in flight #5 with 21-2 and 21-12 wins. The Mustangs took their second 5-0 sweep of the tournament against Gaston.
In Exhibition,
Sarah Straub and
Juliana Seno grabbed a 21-8 and 21-7 win in their first contest and notched a 21-10 and 21-15 win in the second.
Abby Bruce and
Giulia Viglietta also grabbed two exhibition wins, as the duo slotted a 21-15 and 23-21 win and 21-6 and 21-16 win.
The Mustangs will take on day two of the Virginia Beach Tournament on Saturday. The team will face Richard Bland College at 11 a.m. and Wake Technical Community College at 2 p.m.
